I'm praying the answer to your question isn't Orgeron when it's all said and done.
As much as we all love bashing O, LSU fans included, I don't think he'll ever be the "worst SEC hire in history". He's a clown and in over his head but he still put together a 9-4 season, something that someone like Bert for example never could do.

Bert was a great hire on paper the day it happened. It just didn't work out.

Eh, it was unconventional and seemed kind of like they stole something from Wisconsin, but I always had my reservations

Bert won at Wisconsin when he inherited a program in good standing, just like O did.
O had one of the easiest schedules we've ever had last year and still managed to lose to Troy and lose by 30 to State.

He was if we're looking at win totals alone but if you looked a bit beneath the surface at big games, bowls, coaching philosophy and demeanor the issues were pretty obvious.

Pick any of the last few UT coaches. They're all worse.

If you’re looking in retrospect, maybe, but even then I’d say no. If you’re looking at it from a “What information did the AD use to make the decision to hire that person” point of view, then absolutely not. McElwain was considered an up-and-comer with a lot of potential at the time of his hire. If Florida hadn’t hired him, some other big-name program would have.
The two worst hires from a real-time perspective in recent memory are Derek Dooley and Ed Orgeron. Dooley had basically one good season at whichever directional Louisiana school he was at when Tennessee picked him up, and it was not the one immediately preceding his hire. Orgeron, meanwhile, had one of the worst head coaching win percentages in SEC history when LSU decided to give him their job. Dooley, of course, did not work out. The jury is still out on Orgeron.

Well yeah I remember people asking the pigs "how are yall going to out-Bama Bama with Mississippi State level recruits?" Even at the day of the hire it didn't seem like a slam dunk.
But frankly, what coaching hire could the pigs get that is better on paper? Chad is a worse hire on paper than Bert, so its just a risk they have to take.

I agree. He seemed like a great hire at the time to me. Good pedigree and he was supposed to be a good offensive mind that would correct the mess Muschamp left on offense.

UF is still trying to correct the mess Muschump left on offense.

I thought the same thing.

Probably, but sometimes you have to get a guy that can exploit the resources you have rather than trying to make a splash. That's basically what Auburn did when they hired Gus. They got a guy who had been there, recruited a lot of that offense and that they were comfortable with.

Muschamp was worse at Florida
No way. The best single team at Florida post-Meyer was the 2012 Florida team. Muschamp also brought in some very impressive talent. McElwain, not so much.
Here are Florida's Team S&P+ rankings each season this decade:
2010: #28
2011: #33
2012: #3
2013: #33
2014: #24
2015: #30
2016: #15
2017: #86
Those last three were McElwain.

Derek Dooley is perhaps the all-time worst hire. Butch Jones isn't much better. Ed Orgeron? Yikes.
McElwain seems to be a very weird dude but he essentially had two 10-win seasons, won his division twice, finished his second season ranked in the top 15, and won SEC COY. Then he lost control of his players/they quit on him.

I'm shocked that it took until the 2nd page for someone to say Derek Dooley.

I see Auburn hiring Gus less because of what he brought to the table in theory and more because it justified firing Chiz so quickly after a national title.
The talking points back then were that the 2010 team was basically Cam + Gus and Chiz was just lucky to be there with them. Therefore hiring Gus was a way to double down on the only national title winning formula for Auburn in the modern era.
That is why I think Gus got extended despite his seat being hot- once he is fired that basically flushes 8 years of what the program has worked towards down the toilet.

I can give Tennessee a little break on the Dooley hire because Lane left them well after
that years coach carousel had ended.
Orgeron is the worst when you consider the circumstances. Alleva had a jumpstart on searching for a coach and settled on a guy who just two years earlier couldn’t even get an interview at Syracuse
