If you had to choose between winning a Nobel prize in any field of your choosing or winning an Olympic gold in any sport of your choosing, which one would you pick?
For the purposes of the question, if you choose Nobel, you actually become smart in that field, and if you choose Olympics, you become good at that sport.

Well...there is a monetary award that goes with the Nobel...right around $1 MM. Plus, what you have done actually helps society...so there's that.
I've never met an Olympic Gold medal winner...I have met a Nobel Price Laureate (Chemistry). My father worked with two Nobel Prize Laureates (Both Physics)...so I am a bit biased.

If I picked Olympic gold, I would pick basketball making me one of the best American basketball players and a multi millionaire.
If I picked Nobel prize, it would be for curing cancer. Probably similar or more money... if the gov't or medical system didn't take it all.
So probably basketball because its more fun.

I went to h.s. with a kid who graduated at 9, had his first nobel nomination by 12. He's been nominated like 4 or 5 times, 0 wins though. Swam with/against a shite ton of gold medalists. I think my coaches alone puts me at around 5 golds and about the same in silvers. Absolutely would take the nobel W all day. Never see them coaching/teaching kids.

The only reason to pick being the gold medalist is if it's in a sport that is popular outside of the Olympic context. If winning Olympic gold means you inherit the talent of Lebron James or Rafael Nadal - both gold medalists who are among the best ever in very popular sports - then be a gold medalist and go make many millions in your sport and nail all the hot women you could ever want. But if it's a gold medal in curling... uh, no. Be a Nobel winner.

Baw is literally one of the most intelligent mf'ers on the face of this planet. Downsouthjukin should have heard about this kid if he formerly lived in the town claims in his profile. Anywho here's a couple links backing my claim huffpost follow up story a couple years back , another article... and generally showing what a bad arse this kid is. Had to google some of the shite in the title/abstract of his postdoctoral thesis

quote:
Last year, Gregory Robert Smith earned his master's in mathematics from the University of Virginia. He was 16, the youngest ever to receive a graduate degree from Thomas Jefferson's institution.
He also received his fifth nomination that year for the Nobel Peace Prize, his mother, Janet Smith, said last week.
quote:
His parents have moved several times to enhance their only child's education. They went from Pennsylvania to Florida when he was in second grade after a national search for a school system that would let him progress at his own rate. He jumped from second to fourth grade in a couple of weeks, skipped junior high and entered high school at 7
So apparently this is how they ended up in n.e. FL. I also say he started at 8, and stick by those words

Winning the Nobel for an accomplishment in science means that you've advanced knowledge a significant step. Sometimes it's a profound step forward. What could be more gratifying for a human than to be acknowledged and rewarded for such a feat?
