Not in the case of Sumlin.
In 15 seasons of being an offensive coordinator and head coach he has called plays a total of 8 games.
Just for fun, what 8 games? I'm not arguing BTW.

Mullen also developed Chris Relf.. yes Chris Relf into a serviceable QB. I think just as much credit needs to be given to Mullen on developing Dak into the QB he turned out to be. I don't know if he turns out nearly as good if he goes to LSU etc. That being said Dan was also one of the few power 5 schools to offer him as a QB.
He is also developing Fitz in a similar fashion. The guy may struggle with some things but he is one of the if not the best QB developers in the college game.

I just think maybe we should've looked a little harder instead of throwing a tantrum and leaving the table when the hottest coach on the market wanted to hear out Texas (even if he was leaning their anyway), and then settling for O right away. We have a top 10 national job and had a 3 month head start on everyone, we settled on a DL coach who no one else, not even mid major openings, bothered to reach out to about the head coach position. He could perform well, but it's okay to admit that knowing what we knew at the time, it was an abysmal search and we settled. I don't know why LSU fans feel the need to validate it like it was actually a good hire. If ANY other SEC shook hired him, we would be pointing and laughing
Good post. But everything you mentioned is still just a bunch of opinions.
He may or may not succeed, but again, he's only coached 7 games at LSU.
And even though we "had a head start," obviously Alleva waited out Herman too long.

Bert seemed like a slam dunk hire for Arkansas when we got him. He'd taken Wisconsin to three Rose Bowls and his hard nosed rushing attack philosophy was something the Hogs were comfortable with.
What we didn't know is that he's a lovable lug with an easy going and hands off approach. Something you can get away with in the Big 10 but will get you in trouble in the SEC.
As an example after being massacred by Auburn Bert stirred himself and was very involved in preparing for Florida. We crushed the Gators... and he then went back to his easy going ways with predictable results. If he got in people's business every week like he did then Arkansas would be a dark horse candidate to compete for the West this year instead of hoping to win 7 or more games if things work out.

Good discussion here, even on the points I disagree. None of the usual sniping and immature cuts. The kids must be in school today.

I was pretty excited when we had a good QB and won the SEC, and I'm pretty excited about the future now that we have three good QBs on roster
If he can't to trust his new OC, lets his bone-headed stubbornness take over and fails to evolve the offense and make the proper in-game adjustments then patience will wear out by the end of the season.

Seems like a huge issue is that so much emphasis has been put on recruiting, that great football mind/developers of talent are overlooked

This year will show if Gus is a good head coach or not. All the pieces are in place just have to play the games and not beat himself.

Something obviously changed over the last few years, as the focus changed to recruiting top talent because Saban was winning at an elite level on talent alone.
The reality is that it's hard as hell to gather a staff that evaluates talent, recruits at a high level AND develops the talent once it hits campus and at the same time they are capable and willing to evolve and adjust their schemes to fit the talent they have on hand.
To do it at an elite level consistently over an extended period of time is practically unheard of in this day and age of college football.

That's easy. The last 8 games of Texas A&M's 2002 season after Dino Babers was fired...or was it 9?
He didn't call plays at Oklahoma.

Exactly. High level recruiter. Doesn't double as either an OC or DC. "Player's coach." Difference is, O is willing to let the coordinators do their jobs.

I'd like to see Mullen in charge of an LSU, FSU, Clemson, Alabama, etc
However, I like the fact he has stayed at MsSt and I hope he stays there till he retires.

It was high times for our rivals until that crafty bastard reeled off less than a dozen SEC losses total over the next fricking decade. shite's not so damn funny anymore, wonder why?

Yes, but do you have another Heisman contender like Jeremy Johnson?

Mullen has only had a winning record in conference once and he had a NFL QB for multiple years. Either he is not as good as you guys think or State's football program sucks . Since Mullen got to State have they actually done better then anyone else in the west.
