When was the last time it was this bad?

The obvious Saban aside, who the hell out there inspires confidence and optimism?

I think Mullen is next here but flies under the radar because he's at a program that struggles to get elite talent.

Freeze has been good but at a hefty price. How he will adjust his recruiting and the effects on his coaching remain to be seen.

Smart at UGA is optimistic but still in the too early to tell stage.

Mac at UF doesn't seem like the guy to me, I think he needs to recruit better.

Sumlin, Malzahn, Butch, Bret - I think we have enough data on them to conclude that while some might be decent to good coachs, they aren't anything to get super excited about.

Orgeron is a DL coach who no one else wanted. Some LSU fans feel optimistic but they're lying to themselves or completely biased to classify him as a good coach right now. Best case is he ends up as a success story who coaches who failed miserably and recovered nicely. Hopefully but yet to be seen.

Muschamp would be in the same boat as O, another coach who has already failed in the league.

I was pretty excited when we had a good QB and won the SEC, and I'm pretty excited about the future now that we have three good QBs on roster

Malzahn was an incredible OC
Bielema was a great DC
Butch Jones was a decent OC

Kevin Sumlin was an offensive coordinator for a grand total of 8 games (in which he called plays). He somehow conned his way into a CO-OC without playcalling duties and 2 head coaching jobs.

Gus is definitely the best of the bunch, I didn't lump them together because I feel they are all equal but because we have a good enough sample size on them to make judgements and none of them move the needle much for me. I could be wrong on Gus, as it looks like a couple Aubie posters feel a lot better about him.

1. Saban
2. Malzahn
3 and below: the poors can fight for the remainder of spots.

It's probably that there really aren't a lot of great coaches available at a given moment, but don't kid yourself by thinking the calculus doesn't include the guaranteed income they have from the SEC network.

There is virtually no incentive to rock the boat and pony up for a splash hire. They would never say this publicly, but ADs are probably perfectly fine with 8-4 type seasons so long as enough fan excitement exists to get people to renew season tickets.

It will definitely be interesting to see if the SEC will still be considered the best conference 5-10 years from now. An objectionable person would not be too optimistic about that.

damn, it's hard to argue with any of this

the only thing I disagree with (but just slightly) is Muschamp - I think he got a raw deal at UF

But at best, he is in the same boat as Mullens, decent coach at a school that is hard to recruit at & it won't get any easier with Clemson clicking like they are right now

The hires of the early to mid 2000s did not appear to quite reflect that.

Honest personal opinions: Sumlin is biggest fraud, followed closely by Butch Jones. Orgeron not too far behind Jones, and then followed by Malzhan as most over rated. All the other coaches with exception of Mullen are middling imo. Agree that Mullen is most legit, great job at MSU considering, and will one day land a prime job.

when does our TV deal with ESPN expire?

Cuz we ain't getting that type of deal again, not unless the financial picture improves dramatically over there...

I have a feeling that the SEC's money advantage will end when the next round of TV contracts are negotiated & that the playing field between conferences will even out a little

Fraud is a bit much. Jones has only failed to meet expectations one season. What he is is a goofball who is about as tone deaf as you can be when it comes to talking to the press/fans. That matters when you have a disappointing season like last year (fans will hate you for it) but is overlooked as the usual coachspeak when you win. He's done a great job rebuilding but the question is whether or not he's plateaued as a coach and if he has it's time to go.

We'll know soon enough if he's gone as far as he can (certainly there's a good argument to made that he has) but regardless of what happens we're finally in a position to compete again. And unlike in prior years, the job will be much more attractive. I can't/won't hate the man for bringing us back from the dead even if that's all he ever does and is fired as a result.

Not in the case of Sumlin.

In 15 seasons of being an offensive coordinator and head coach he has called plays a total of 8 games.

I'll withhold judgement on Malzahn till after this year. Yeah, Jeremy Johnson was a flop, but last season would have been two games better had Sean White not been made of glass, so not entirely his fault. I think Auburn will be much improved this season and it appears there is some depth at QB now.

Butch Jones is nothing but a cheerleader. I would guess most HS coaches at large programs know more about the Xs and Os than him. Dead serious.

Sumlin and Lyle are without a doubt the two worst coaches in the SEC

I feel better about Gus now than I have in a while, and I'm willing to get excited about 2017 even though I know we don't perform well historically when we are predicted to because I think Stidham is the real deal.

But I'm still a little gun shy after that Clemson game last year. We could and should have won that game. That was the most retarded game plan I've ever seen from any coach, and I guess he just over thought it to the point of being ridiculous. Looking back at his "3-QB and Twirly Bird" game plan and not playing Pettway at all, I'm hoping he got a clue and thinks "What the frick was I thinking??!!?"

...Of course with Gus it would be "What the crap was I thinking??!!?"
