Is AU 2014 the Texas A&M of 2013?

Preseason anyway, the 2014 Auburn team feels awfully similar to the 2013 Texas A&M team.
Both beat Alabama rather dramatically the year before (and lost to LSU), both had high powered offenses at the time with good (sometimes great) QB play, and both had questionable defenses.
During the off season last year, A&M fans anointed Sumlin the next GOAT, now many AU fans are doing the same with Malzahn.
Then the season started . . . A&M went backwards a bit (especially defensively) with the loss of some key starters.
Will AU suffer the same fate? Why or why not?

That would be very disappointing.

This is actually a decent comparison even though Malzahn had a much better first year than Sumlin.

Auburn is far more talented on defense. They could very well be a 9 win team, but they won't have to play basketball on grass to do it.

Their defense won't regress as much as ours did

Mostly bama fans, AU thread... It's true the melt continues!

2012 A&M finished 3rd in the West.

Even as bad as our defense was we were a few plays away from 12-1 (and 7-6). We towed that thin line all year and came out pretty even. Had we had Auburn's string of luck, it's pretty easy to come up with a scenario where we are playing for the national title game as well.
It's unlikely, but if their defense is poor again and they don't catch the same breaks I could see them winning 8-9 games.

Nah, but good attempt 8/10

We get better on defense this year. A&M got drastically worse on D last year.

They aren't the same as aTm, but I think a 9 and 3 season is probable. The schedule is brutal. I think we drop one on the road to either OM, MSU, or KSU; one to either LSU, USC or aTm at home; and one to UGA or Bama on the road.

Lol.
Why would we take a step back defensively? That is retarded.
And our offense should be better as well.
All around, stupid as frick analogy.
Congrats.

2014 AU will be considerably better than 2013 A&M. AU will actually field a defense, and their offense won't rely on one guy to do it all. AU is probably the favorite - or should be - to win the SEC. No one really expected A&M to finish better than 3rd in sec west in 2013.

Absolutely don't think AU is wrong to expect a good to great season BUT I think A&M's expectations last season were way more valid. Its like if Auburn had gotten one more year with Cam.
Nonetheless, I still think the West is wide open. I wouldn't be surprised to see any of the usual suspects (UA, AU, LSU) in Atlanta. A&M and OM COULD surprise. And if they aren't there I guarantee they will spoil the shite out of someone's season.

They'll go backwards offensively, and yes they will be similar to Texas A&M
