Have Spurrier's shots at Saban's recruiting rankings and his need to overwork stemmed from his belief that Saban needed a school like Alabama where he could out recruit everyone to mask his deficiencies as a coach? Spurrier even went so far today as to name Gus Malzahn as one of the "great" SEC coaches while declining to give Saban the same designation.

When you think about the 2010 Iron Bowl, 2011 Bama vs LSU, and 2013 Iron Bowl, all three games exemplify when Saban was unable to out-talent the opponent and his coaching abilities failed to close out the game. When Saban is unable to out-talent opponents, does he fall apart?

One could argue in favor of this...

Then again, recruiting is part of the game, and that's one reason Nick Saban's teams are rarely out-talented by other teams.

Interesting thoughts, but I give this a snowball's chance in hell of becoming a reasonable discussion on here.

It's not like he was Mr. America at MSU or did anything worht a shite in Miami. Those two teams don't have a recruiting base like LSU and Bama.

Talent beats coaching in college nine times out of 10. Or 11/12 out of 13/14 for Bama.

Every coach has their own strategy to win and overcome deficiencies. I don't think Saban is an elite or even excellent gameday coach. However, he overcomes this by being the best recruiter and program manager in the nation.

Spurrier is the opposite. Elite gameday coach, but lazy recruiter. Kind of like Petrino at Arkansas.

I don't think he ever said that Saban wasn't a great coach.

Does anyone that is knowledgeable about football really think saban is a great coach?

My previous post on the subject:

Anyway, saban will never be anywhere close to one of the best. He is an above average coach and that is about it. Great defensive mind, nothing offensively and sorta a game manger on the sideline.

He was about a .500 coach for years at Michigan state and with the dolphins. And his first year at bama.

He is an excellent program builder at the college level but has also done that at two schools where anyone can win at. Especially at bama with the highest player and coach bankroll to work with anywhere.

Give him equal talent to his opponent, his old school conservative style wins at about a .600 clip. Above average, far from special.

A great coach wins. Period. Saban wins more than anyone. Ergo Saban is a great coach. Spurrier (and I guess you) come across as childish here trying to downplay Saban's status as one of the great coaches.

Saban has stated himself that he wasn't the best coach so he needed the best players.

I think the difference in respect that Saban gets vs. Calipari is interesting.

saban is a Jimmy Johnson clone. Jimmy Johnson himself said he was not a great gameday X's and O's guy. Their strength is finding talent. It's not easy, because of all of the talent, but get bama in a close game. saban will make questionable coaching decisions every time.

Spurrier really is starting to come across as pathetic. Saban has four NCs under his belt. Whether it be because of coaching or recruiting or global warming, that's four times more than the old arse ball coach has.

Spurrier is about five years, a pair of coke bottle glasses and a lisp away from being Lou Holtz.

Won the SEC.CG beating a Florida team stacked with Coach Urban Meyer's star studded recruits when he only had 2 years of recruits of his own. His recruits were freshman and sophomores compared to CUMs who may have been even 5th year seniors. CUMs was led by a vet Heisman QB Tim Tebow compared to a 1st year starter and very inconsistent Greg McElroy. So yea obviously your point makes amazing sense.

I doubt that Saban and all of his rings really give a frick what Spurrier thinks of him.
