re: Question for TLJ haters re Luke:

IMO the biggest problem with the entire Luke story is that Luke himself that he didn’t want to be found.

So why did he make a map?

Then there’s the fact that Poe doesn’t even know the second in command after Leia even though apparently the entire resistance can fit onto 4 capital ships.

You would have me believe that the Xwing squadron commander doesn’t know who is second in command when the entire resistance looks to be only 400 people strong.

As for Donald Glover, I guess that's a view of our society today. Billy Dee Williams was a smooth suave ladies man. Donald Glover looks like he wears flannel pajamas while he sips on his soy milk Chai tea latte.

Donald Glover is probably going to be the best part of his movie. He’s a great actor.

Now old Rian has said that it was because the backstory wasn't relevant,

I stopped reading here because I truly believe this to be true.

re: *Spoliers* Rey's Parents

I personally don’t care that much about who Rey’s parents were but there was an entire scene where she asks that dark-side cave to tell her who her parents are and it shows her reflection.

So, unless that didn’t have a secret meaning, why would the cave show her reflection to her?

Also, this is Star Wars. It’s set in a galaxy far, far away...

...where billions upon billions of people are Skywalkers. You see, the original Skywalker man was a pimp and fricked half the galaxy so everybody is related to everyone.

So did you just start this thread to pat yourself on the back?

Congrats.

Btw, when it’s revealed that Kylo Ren (The most trust-worthy human in the galaxy) was lying will you start a thread and kick yourself in the nuts?
I feel it’s a bit of poetic justice that someone fricked up JJ’s beloved Star Wars the way he fricked up my beloved Star Trek.

...except I also love Star Wars so I get double-fricked.

This only makes sense if politics being brought into Movies and TV were a new phenomenom.

He just wants to see his brand of politics in movies anyway.

Movies are art and art has always reflected the politics of the day. In fact, some of the best movies have had direct social commentary on society at the time.

What we have in the case of The Last Jedi is people making a mediocre movie while also inserting political SUBTEXT into the movie which, to be honest, was never even thought of in the OT.

If you try for something grand and fall flat on your face then people will laugh or be upset. It’s like seeing one of you best friends get kicked in the nuts. You’re Either going to laugh and love it or sympathize and hate it.

Oh, and I failed to mention that they are both uber-Catholic. Can't divorce.

If you file divorce papers then as far as the government is concerned you are divorced. I’m a divorced Catholic. Catholics have Shorty marriages just like any other religion
I realize you’re probably drunk but what the hell os wrong with the girl??!!!!

I HAVE to know!!
I have to know:

What makes her not right for your son?
Well it misfired horribly. Not a single person laughed in the theater I was at.

quote:

Like imagine if TFA actually ended where Luke tosses the lightsaber aside?

If you ask me, this is the single most insulting thing to happen in The Last Jedi and I felt it was directed to me as a fan.

To me Johnson had Luke Skywalker take this object that fans of the films hold as almost a sacred object and toss it over his should as if to say “frick your reverence” for this stuff.

He had a hero of my childhood toss it aside. NOT tell Rey to keep it and leave. NOT to have Luke destroy it himself.

He tossed that saber aside and it felt like Luke kind of tossed my reverence for him and the OT aside.
quote:

He killed his father so he’d kill anyone even snoke, but why did he do it?

Snoke’s corpse isn’t even cold when you get the answer. He wants to rule the galaxy with Rey. Snoke is in the way of that.

I guess In that way Kylo is more of an action man than Vader. Kill first THEN ask if the other person wants to partner up. Vader was whispering to Luke to join him against the Emporer in Cloud City but didn’t ever go through with the overthrow until his son turned him.

Kylo has a different path to navigate. I disliked the lack of Rey near the end as well.
quote:

But a good example of Johnson using preconceived notions and established Star Wars scenarios from the OT for cheap twists instead of setting up his own genuine surprises. It’s like he thought it would be surprising because the character hasn’t gotten any screen time, which is the reason you shouldn’t do it but at the same time copies the Vader saving Luke from the emperor

What killing Snoke did for me was establish in my mind that Kylo Ren is way more ambitious than Darth Vader. Vader was a pupil. Snoke made fun of Kylo’s childish mask and Kylo fricked the old man over and took charge.

Ambitions mother F’er. Which is why I was so confused that he lied to Hux about who killed Snoke. He sounded like a kid trying to hide something bad he did from his parents. He’s running from consequences in one moment and then sport-force-choking Hux as a hobbie the next minute.

That’s bad writing imo.
quote:

just can’t come up with any logical explanation in my head how Snoke got into power where he is.

So my only question to you is WHY does it matter so much to you? I loved SW as a kid and I love it now, but it was a story about Luke and then about Luke and his evil father.

This trilogy doesn’t need a well fleshed out Snoke if we have a well fleshed-out Kylo and Rey. It’s their movie. And Adam Driver is killing it.

There’s one thing about this movie that I can’t figure out if it’s genius or if it’s bad writing, but I can never figure out what Kylo’s plans are in the moment. Is it because Driver has a great range is emotional expressions in his face or is it because the writers make him redeemable in this act and then blood-lusted in the next act?
quote:

Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly flaws with this movie, but the ones I see most on here (snoke only one example) and elsewhere online are undeserved

Not knowing where Snoke came from is a nothing-burger to me.

I have a feeling Kylo was lying about Rey’s parents. He’ll, Obi Wan lies about parentage in the OT. frick me if I’ll trust the dude that killed Han Solo.

My gripe is plot points and characterizations. That feel out of place. It’s an alright movie. That’s it. Alright
quote:

No he isn't. He is the one who created the conflict between the original trilogies and these.

Was this in TFA?

quote:

He also had no one to show him the dark side of the force. This means the writer either completely ignored the established rules of their own story, or they need to explain why he was able to do thi

Because I know this wasn’t.

quote:

Like I said earlier, if Jon Snow starts flying and shooting fireballs in GOT, then the writers better give an explanation.

Unfortunately this went over my head as I’m not a GOT fan.

All I know is that when the OT came out you watched the movie and hoped there would be another one. You discussed them a little with your boys and then you went play basketball.

You didn’t come up with theories that you could publish on YouTube for the joy of getting views. And there were very VERY little of anything in the EU.

So I understand that you probably would like to know the answers, but ultimately, that’s for another movie or trilogy.
quote:

But with Snoke.... where is he during the OT? This guy seems powerful, ancient, and important. There needs to be some explanation for how he came to power.

Trust me, if Return of the Jedi had been made in this day and age of expanded universes and cinematic universes then this board would be ask, NAY!...They would be DEMANDING to know who Emperor Palpatine was. Where did he come from? What’s his home life like? Does he rent or own?

Audiences today demand too much. I’ve never cared what Snoke did or who he was to get to where he is now. Why? Because it doesn’t matter in the slightest in the Star Wars universe. Star Wars is for children. All you needed to know in 82 was that the hooded guy that appears on screen for the first time 40 minutes into the final movie of a trilogy is the personification of evil. That’s it. I don’t need to know how he ticks. I don’t need his story.

Snoke was a side character. And I’m not trying to be derogatory here, but I’ve never given less fricks about the back story of a MINOR character in a movie. And there is no debate, Snoke is a minor character through the first 2 films.
quote:

Luke- We waited 35 years to see the most powerful Jedi

Where are you people getting this shite from? I know it’s not Return of the Jedi because Luke was doing the Electric Boogaloo on Emperor Palpaten’s throne room floor until dad came bail him out.

Is Luke being the “most powerful Jedi Ever” some EU shite or something?
quote:

Don't get me wrong, it isn't the best Star Wars movie by any means. But I was expecting Baby Geniuses in Space from reading this board

Exactly my thoughts. Although I rank this the lowest of the 3 new films so far. Let’s hope it doesn’t get much worse.
