... first-year units.

(Mods, entire subject line would not fit.)

Ellis Johnson: Auburn defense has more 'good, solid SEC players' than his other first-year units

Johnson had ten defensive players, off of his 2008 defense at South Carolina, eventually drafted into the NFL ... including a first rounder or two and including a fair number of future All-SEC defenders.

Is Auburn that loaded on defense this coming season? If so, Auburn might make waves under EJ if they have any solid journeymen blue-collar guys mixed in and if their offense can put any points on the board.

I think Auburn actually has some talent on that team. I think they could end up being a lot like the 2012 OM team

Let it go. New coach talking to the most insecure fanbase in the country. Just coachspeak.

I still laugh at the irony of E. Johnson at Auburn. Undoubtedly he is good at what he does but I remember AU fans being on Johnson's arse for complaining about AU's hurry up offense a couple of years ago.

By all means, don't be fooled by the look of the defenses that Auburn fielded under the Gene Chizik regime. There is, no doubt, some talent on that side of the ball. To this point they have just been soft, undisciplined, poorly prepared, and terribly coached. I expect there to be upgrades at every position outside of defensive end.

Meh, just typical bs from ellis...

From last year:

"Q: What can Southern Miss fans expect from this team?

A:Any team I put on the field I want to play hard, physical and smart. I believe this team is going to play that way too, but we need to get more consistent. We’ve got the potential to be a big-play team on both offense and defense."

New coach says nice thing about current team while giving a gentle slap to all former employers film at 11.

This is coach speak, no more...no less. Auburn has some talent on defense, sure. This is not a reflection on that talent.

That's coach speak.

I bet he said shite about Southern Miss before they went 0-12.

Last year's Auburn team was the practice National Champion.

May be true but I look at most of this as coach speak. Those guys need confidence after last year. Saban does the same thing, tear down the team when needed or build them up when needed.

Not surprising. We do have talent.

Also not surprising all the gumps discounting it coach speak.

I doubt it, but it is hard to know exactly why we have sucked so hard on defense the last few years. Lack of talent? Poor coaching? Poor preparation? Undisciplined? Weak? Combination of some or all of the above?

I mean, obviously we don't hire a new coach if we expect the same thing, but I'm not sure the difference can be as dramatic as it needs to be in just one year for anyone to get too excited.

I like EJ. He had great defenses. He was an awful HC, but a great Def Coor.

He'll do really well with the level of talent AU has. He's a decent recruiter, but not on the level that you might expect. He's good for 1 or 2 big recruits a year, but he only focuses on half a dozen in the first place. He did get Clowney, so that's saying something.

Has a Southern Miss poster come in yet and tossed in his 2 cents?

They always do

and it's gold.

some people are suggesting this is 'coach-speak'... which doesn't really make much sense. Usually coaches try to downplay expectations. Granted, he was speaking to an Auburn crowd, so that obviously played into his comments.

Or maybe EJ's just an idiot who doesn't know how to properly 'coachspeak'.

IMO, we have some decent players, but we're a loooong way from being competitive, especially on defense.
