Now this geriatric retard is losing to teams that went 9-44 last year and have never beaten a power5 team

It’s sad to see what has become of South Carolina baseball. Founders Park is a special place and ~15 years ago they were far and away the premier program in all of college baseball. Watching Coastal and ECU pass them by has added a lot of salt to their numerous wounds as well I’d think.

Yes we all thought it was crazy, both for Mainieri to want to coach again and that any team, much less a program like USC, would want to hire him. But here we are.

When a 64 year old says this in 2021, why would you hire him 3 years later?

quote:

“I went to see another surgeon down here and I ended up having another surgery and it helped some as well but I’ve just been having this terrible neck pain for almost three years now and it’s kind of morphed into these headaches,” Mainieri said. I just have not felt well for almost three years now. It affects my sleeping and how I feel during the day.”

“Friends, being very honest with me, have told me, ‘man you look awful.’ I just haven’t felt myself for the last couple of years and I think it’s really affected the way I’ve been able to coach because as a coach, I think that one of my greatest strengths has been to be very engaged with the players.

“I just haven’t been able to do that as much the last couple of years. Consequently, I just don’t feel like I’ve been the same coach. I just don’t feel like I’ve been carrying my weight.”

“I reached out to (athletic director) Scott (Woodward),” Mainieri said. “I told him I hadn’t been feeling well and told him I felt that maybe the program would be better served it somebody else was leading it and that hurt to say that because I love coaching and I love doing what I’m been doing for 39 years."

There is no bottom for this guy. He will get a shovel out and dig deeper. Tanner should be banned from USC for life. He hired an old man to coach a young man's game. Idiotic at best.

Pretty sure they all hate the guy now for what he has done as an athletic director.

Any Carolina fan you speak to will tell you that he's a generational baseball coach and a terrible AD. Did he hire Frank Martin ? Seems like he's still living off that miraculous Final 4 run from 8 or 9 years ago. That and Dawn Staley making them a premier women's Bball school.

We let him go 3 years late, but it brought us JJ + two titles so it all worked out. CPM shouldn't be coaching your team.

It'll be their only win ever against a P4 team since they're disbanding their program next season unless they merge with Elon. Then, they'll be part of Elon Univ. Lol

he'll forever be held in good regard for what he did in the dugout and Omaha - where he was equipped to excel -

he'll also always be forever chastised after he egotistically forced himself into the AD role - dismantling men's big 3 sports - decision after decision and hire after hire - in an ignorantly mind numbing Barney Fife manner that has been a slow and painful burn -

Nope. Martin was hired in March of 2012 during Tanner's last season as baseball coach. Didn't hire Dawn Staley either.

His hires in their big 3 men's sports have been

Chad Holbrook - bad, fired
Mark Kingston - bad, fired
Paul Mainieri - bad, will prob be fired

Lamont Paris - bad, will prob be fired

Will Muschamp - bad, fired
Shane Beamer - average, still has a job

He actually took over a pretty strong department. Spurrier had the football program as a top 10 team. Baseball was coming off of a ton of success. Mens basketball had just made a new hired they were excited about. And Dawn Staley was starting to cook. Then Spurrier got old and faded quickly. Mens basketball had one good season but just became dreadful. And his sport, baseball, has gradually turned from arguably the best program in the country when he left to maybe a bottom third program in the SEC.
