now that my favorite sport is finally here. I'd like a rundown of each of the contenders. Here's what I know about Texas

Going into 2026, this isn’t some rebuild where we’re talking ourselves into upside. Texas expects to be good. Period. After what Schloss did last year, nobody’s pretending this is a “see what happens” kind of season. If they’re not in the Omaha discussion by May, something went sideways.

Pitching is still the backbone. That hasn’t changed. You don’t look at this staff and wonder who’s taking the ball on Friday. Riojas and Harrison have been through it. They’ve pitched in real spots. And if Volantis actually makes the jump to starting instead of just being the guy who slams the door late, that’s when this thing gets interesting. He’s got the kind of stuff that plays anywhere in this league. The bullpen probably won’t have a bunch of preseason All-American types, but they’ve got arms. In the SEC, if you can throw strikes and miss barrels, you survive.

Offensively, it’s not a lineup built on one superstar carrying everything. It’s more about whether they grind you down. Mendoza feels like the steady presence. Borba’s bat matters more than people realize. And Tinney behind the plate is massive. Not just because of what he does with the bat, but because when Texas has been rolling the last couple of years, it’s been with a catcher who controls the pace of a weekend. That stuff doesn’t show up in a box score, but it wins series.

The outfield is probably the one real question mark. There’s speed. There’s athleticism. But SEC Friday night isn’t midweek ball. Somebody’s got to prove they can handle 94 with life and not just feast on back-end pitching. That’s the difference between being good and being a national seed.

Depth is the quiet factor here. Thirty SEC games is a grind. You’re going to have a bad weekend. Probably two. The teams that survive are the ones that don’t spiral when it happens. Last year they handled that pretty well. If they stay healthy and a couple younger guys take a step forward, there’s enough here to absorb the punches.

Preseason rankings are nice. They are high again. But in this conference that just means everyone circles you. Two rough weekends and the message boards light up.

Ceiling? Omaha. Legitimately.

Floor? Hosting and watching it slip away if the bats go cold at the wrong time.

This feels like a mature team that understands what the league is. Now it’s about stacking wins early and not letting one bad stretch turn into three.

Gotta think LSU is still the favorite but I like our chances. What say you?

The team is once again full of a lot of new faces. Branch, Phelps, and Jackson all return which is a big deal but, otherwise, we've got a fresh group of portal names to learn - albeit some good ones:
1. Kenny Ishikawa will be our leadoff man and a weekend starter on the mound
2. Phelps likely going to be the 2 or 4 hole, depending on matchups
3. Branch may be a solid 3 or 5. 3rd year in the SEC and his final year in college, I expect him to mash
4. Bryce Calloway is already garnering some preseason all-american buzz, start at 1B and can pitch righty as well
5. Jackson could honestly bat anywhere from the 2-5 spot, he knocked the cover off the ball in cape cod and looked friggin great in Fall ball. He'll play C and OF
6. Jack Arcamone is likely going to end up an outfield starter, platooning with Jackson at C. Experienced bat with rare speed on the bases for a Catcher
7-9. Could see a mix of guys in these spots, especially early on: Ryan Black, Ryan Wynn, TL Saxon, Jordy Oriach, Scott Newman, Cole Johnson, Brennan Hudson, Cole Koniarsky, Michael O'Shaugnessy. Lot of options.

Around the horn, I'd guess:

Catcher: Jackson, Arcamone, Hudson
1B: Calloway, Oriach, Hudson
2B: Black, Wynn
SS: Branch, Lujo
3B: Phelps, O'Shaugnessy
LF: Arcamone, Johnson
CF: Ishikawa, Newman
RF: Koniarsky, Johnson
DH: Oriach, Hudson

Pitching will be almost completely new. In addition to Ishikawa, odds on starters are likely to be Joey Volchko and Matt Scott from Stanford, Caden Aoki from USC, Dylan Vigue from Michigan, maybe Justin Byrd from last year (though he could also be our primary middle relief arm). Would wager Jordan Stephens is our closer, assuming he has his control issues from last year in check. All in all, should be a bit of a front end upgrade at least in experience and stuff. Too, we have a bit better split between Lefty/Right arms - 6 Lefties to 17 Righties. Last year we went a while with only 1 available lefty in Alton Davis after Goldstein went down.

Hard to gauge what this team will ultimately do at this point but fair to set expectations around a host spot again and modify as we gather information. From fall ball, the offensive makeup at least seems to be a lot more reliant on putting balls in play and good base running than just mashing and hoping to out gorilla the other team (and our arms).

We’ll be another solid regional team on the fringe of Top 25

Basically the standard of good not great, we’re going to be a good measuring tool for many teams.

I have no clue how the BaseVOLS will look this year. I expect more than 12 wins.

I assume Alabama will field a team. If so I hope they at least finish ahead of Missouri.

Did the team keep their University of Texas @ Omaha shoes to hopefully use this year? Lol

LSU’s pitching is the best it’s been from 1-15 in the jay johnson era. I believe we will have a better hitting team with more HR. Defense will probably take a step back but a step back from 98% fielding percentage won’t be too bad.

Listened to the last 4 innings of our opener today on the radio. Still have to learn the new roster and what not. Expectations are for a solid season this year. I'm hoping Super Regional.

I just want to ask but this is Ai assisted no? it’s very well done and the perfect use case. I think it’s a great write-up and I also appreciate what is apparently a genuine interest in the sport by you and not a rage-bait captdalton type post.

If so, you should do one for each team if it didn’t take too long. I might try to get one together for the Tigers.

Regardless…respect! We should fill out this thread with every team.

Sullivan got has natty, he's cashing checks, but he's not invested in the program any longer.

We'll win some games, but that's our ceiling.

AI no but I would butcher any attempt to cover the other sec teams. It's all I can do to keep up with my own team :)

College Baseball is my passion. I'd love a summary of all the teams in the conference.
