With an interesting matchup in Nashville tomorrow afternoon, it’s a good time to revisit the UF vs Vandy basketball game
In 1989

The most memorable game of the season for Lett was an overtime win at Vanderbilt that was forever known as the "tennis ball" game. Dwayne Schintzius, Florida's starting center, had been suspended for four games to begin the season after hitting a Florida student with a tennis racket. As a result, visiting SEC crowds took to serenading Schintzius with tennis balls.

It was that way at Memorial Gym, when Florida trailed Vanderbilt 72-70. The game appeared lost when the Gators lost the ball out of bounds with a second remaining. Vandy fans, however, thought the game was over and doused the court with tennis balls.

Head official John Clougherty signaled for a technical. Appropriately, Schintzius went to the line, sinking both free throws to send the game into overtime. Schintzius scored the first seven points of the extra session, lifting Florida to the 81-78 win.

God that dude was such a punk. Not quite Marshall Henderson level but almost.

Best mullet in sports history though.

Damn, just looked him up and he died of cancer in 2018. All kidding aside, RIP Dwayne. Those were some fun days in the PMAC.

John Clougherty. The guy that admitted once - on a hot mic - that he often felt compelled to "even up the game".

I worked in the UF exercise physiology lab when Schintzius was there.

We did a VO2 max test on him. He had the highest absolute VO2 Max I've ever personally seen on a test. Like 6.5+ Liters... It was kind of like testing a horse... A horse with a mullet.

Kentucky threw oranges on the court v Tennessee for years when they would come to Lexington for basketball games. The practice has since been ceased.

Seems pertinent ITT since Kentucky resumes our rivalry with Tennessee today. However, the game is down in Knoxville at the Pay Less Shoes Arena.
