Why is Alabama considered a better job than LSU? Is it just because of the success from Saban years? In terms of NIL, total endowment, talent pool, etc what are the driving factors that make so many say that its so much better? I get a Michigan, OSU, Texas, etc. but what is the separation factor between Alabama and LSU?
Again, I am not saying that its a wrong take, I want to learn why thats a narrative
P.S. - before the people hop in chat saying that I am worried about Lane going to Bama, etc. I am very much aware that there will be those comments on this post, so yeah

I think that's a fair question.
I think the answer to it, ultimately, is long term sustained success. For whatever reason, it's easier for a coach to win here.
A lesser coach looks good. A good coach looks great. A great coach becomes legend.

Historical wins & losses and the brand.
All the other stuff (money, population, etc) you could argue it's even or slight advantage LSU.

NIL and the portal has greatly compressed the tiers of head coaching jobs. Indiana can win the B1G. We're all packed in pretty tight.
I'd put LSU slightly ahead of Alabama because they're the only show in town in a state that grows NFL talent on trees. But it kind of doesn't matter as much as it did before NIL.

If you compare the two schools before Coach Saban you should be able to see why. I know you are going to say something about history doesn’t matter. But before Coach Saban went to LSU what were they? Average team at best. Before Coach Saban went to Alabama they were still considered a top brand. I believe they had a national championship in every decade except the 80’s.

Alabama football is such a strong brand that people just associate it with CFB. Roll tide is a meme that goes beyond just football circles. Enough to where people who have no connection with CFB at all recognize Alabama as “football”.
LSU doesn’t have that cultural pull. Top tier job, but just edged out by prestige.

Alabama will give any coach the resources they need to succeed. It's not about how much money you have, it's about how much you will spend and where you spend it.

As much as I hate to admit historically they’ve had the best program as far as football . Here of late they struck gold with saban. I think they will fall into mediocrity though over the next decade

I remember LSU in the 80's and 90's always referred to a "sleeping giant" Bama has been a powerhouse since Bryant, granted a few off years here and there..then the dynasty under Saban. NIL may change that...I saw LSU's Nike deal...that will get some 5* nationwide player.. especially at QB...or a top transfer can't miss portal player

You must be a youngster. Alabama has been winning championships for quite literally 100 years. They introduced the nation to southern football in 1925 when they went to the Rose Bowl and beat Washington and won its first national championship. It didn’t start with Saban. Bama is a blue blood of blue bloods.
Bama is in the epicenter of football talent. It’s a few hours drive to Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, not to mention homegrown Alabama talent. Historically they have recruited nationally - Joe Namath was from Pennsylvania, but more recently California and Texas.
Does that attract sidewalk fans and bandwagoners? Sure. Many fans weren’t even alive for the Bryant years or even Stallings.
People have counted Bama out regularly over the years. The 40s and 50s were atrocious. The post Bryant 80s were rocky, then along came Gene Stallings with a 92 ‘championship.. In the 2000s with the Mikes many thought it was Bama’s end. Saban arrives and history making continued.
The reports of Bama’s death are and always have been greatly exaggerated.

All of that was before NIL and the transfer portal. Whatever program has the most NIL money will be the most attractive job. The sport is now driven my money to players. I means, Lane said it himself, his decision was based on which school had the most NIL money to give the players. That was the driving reason he chose LSU. Recruiting isn't as much about tradition or home town school anymore as it is which school can pay the most per player.

Agree with the long term thing, but I don't think it's easier to win here. We've gotten lucky with coaches, for one. That can be parsed any number of ways, obviously. People with little to no understanding of history and/or its impact (not aiming that at the OP) tend to dismiss the way Bama went out to battle the big boys in the '20s. That led to Thomas, then Bryant coming back, which fully established Alabama as the heart of the SEC and a dominant program nationally. Then Stallings tenure brought in a natty, and the obvious success from Saban. It's been 100 years of succes, from early on in college football to Saban's run.
