It really looks like he may be a goner.

quote:

The Auburn Tigers and Hugh Freeze are a union that appears to be headed for a split at some point soon. At 0-4 in SEC play, and with Freeze's coaching continuing to appear unsuitable for winning -- between his signs being easy to steal, his accountability remaining minimal, and his insistence on running nearly every play through Jackson Arnold, who doesn't appear to be working out and could be replaced by Saturday -- change could finally be coming to the Plains.

And that change may look like Penn State Nittany Lions head football coach James Franklin, who could reportedly end up at or near the top of Auburn's wish-list this offseason if the program finally cuts ties with Freeze.

There's just one problem, though. The Tigers may not trust Franklin to accomplish the most important thing an Auburn coach can accomplish: beating the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Iron Bowl year in and year out.

He’s earned the buyout.

It is a worse era than Barfield.

I was not alive pre-Shug, but I think record wise it’s competing with the worst stretch ever.

I doubt we hire Franklin.

Yes but his only hope would be if he survives until the iron bowl and beats Alabama. Think tuberville with jet gate where he was getting fired then wins the iron bowl then gets an extension. and malzahn would always get an extension when he was about to get fired when he won.

You pay me $50million not to work, I'm taking a break. Now give, he wasn't under the years' old pressure like Florida Billy or Auburn Hugh, as his pressure basically was a month long if that. But, the 50 would buy a hell of a boat and I would scoot around the Florida keys for a bit.

He really can't do this.

quote:

James Franklin's buyout from Penn State requires him to diligently search for a new job in coaching or broadcasting, according to his contract. If he finds a new position that pays less than the $8 million per year he was owed, Penn State is only responsible for the difference. This "mitigation" clause is a standard part of his contract and differs from other buyouts, such as Jimbo Fisher's, which had no such requirement.

Job search requirement:

Franklin is contractually obligated to actively look for new work in coaching or broadcasting.

Salary offset:
Penn State will only pay the difference between his old contract and any new, lower salary he accepts.

Good faith effort:
The contract specifies that Franklin must make a "good faith effort" to obtain the maximum reasonable salary in his new role.

Buyout structure:
This requirement means that while he is due a large sum, he won't be able to simply collect a full buyout without looking for new employment, unlike some other coaches with different contract terms.

Which makes him attractive to a school like Auburn or even FSU because at least initially they could get them in a good price

Those Franklin buyout clauses have so many loopholes it’s a joke. Any good lawyer could argue diligently working toward similar employment and or similar compensation is so limited that the “diligently” language is ambiguous. Penn State is paying all of that buyout as they well should. frick them. I
Will not shed a single tear for child predator university.

This is not true. Has Auburn ever fired a coach for being 11-1 or 10-2 with the sole loss to Alabama?

This just means he has to do a couple of interviews every offseason. I very seriously doubt there's language that requires him to accept a job offered to him.

I think he probably still wants to coach though. It's not like he's in his late 60s or anything.

You know they are going to be the SEC team that finally hires Gruden, and 3 yrs later they'll be paying another buyout.

If he loses to Arkansas he will probably be fired immediately. If he beats them he will probably get the Mike Norvell treatment and be allowed to leave at the end of the year or be fired.

Franklin doesn’t golf, so Hugh gets the simulator in the buyout?
