Why Lane Kiffin may stay at Ole Miss

If you take a few minutes to review Lanes bio you'll realize Lane and his family are 100% southern in almost every way. Lane will never go to Penn State. His ex-wife, Layla, daughter of ex-Florida QB & 12 year NFL vet John Reeves, and 16 year old son Knox recently moved to Oxford to be near Lane. Lanes brother, Chris (and his 4 children), lives next door to Lane. The only member of the family not in Oxford is Kiffin's 18 year old daughter Presley. She's a volley ball player at Southern Cal. Kiffin's father, Monty, died in Oxford in 2024. Kiffin's mother, Robin, died in Oxford on June 17th this year - 2025. Lanes ex-girlfriend Sally Rychlak wasn't some insignificant hottie on a long list of sidepieces. She was with Lane for 4 years and made a profound impact on Kiffin - settling him down and changing his views on life, family, and himself. Kiffin has changed - he's a better man. Oxford is where his roots have dug in - deep. The only job Kiffin would leave Ole Miss for currently is Florida. I'd say it's a 50/50 proposition as I write this post. Believe it or not - it would be a very hard move for the once easy-come-easy-go aloof and arrogant Lane Kiffin to leave Ole Miss. His life changed in Oxford. Leaving it behind would be one of the hardest decisions of his life.

I'd rather work for Keith Carter than Scott Stricklin.

I read in SI that his daughters had "fantastic fits" for Ole Miss.
Fantastic FITS
hat tip to Matt Ryan, who is apparently SI's version of Larry Leo.

The Stricklin complaint is mostly from the fan side. He could have pressured Napier to get an OC or Mullen to change his DC. He did neither. He isn’t doing the goofy shite some schools do of trying to fire these guys for cause and reveal NCAA violations. For Napier at least, it sounds like he was really easy to work for and given a ridiculously long leash.
Also barring a national championship this is Stricklins third and last football hire, so he will be all in.

well that settles it...

He hit a home run with the basketball hire, no doubt. Carter has oversaw Ole Miss football be the most successful it has been since integration, baseball's only CWS title, made a great hire with Beard, and both basketball teams made the Sweet 16 last year. Right now, Ole Miss is a better ran athletic program.

You are blindly speculating.
Billy had additional funding for staff that he didn't use. Stricklin laughably allowed Billy to go out and hire 150 Staffers. He bent over backwards to give Billy everything he wanted from the start. He absolutely committed more resources to Billy, by far, than any coach in Florida history.

That's great and all but, coaches are roving vagabonds by nature of their business.
How many thousands of times have fans of innumerable teams, in innumerable places, for over a hundred years now, believed that their coaches loved them, their city, their university, had made it their home, their children's home, etc... just to have them pack up and leave overnight?
Kiffin and all of his family could easily make the move to Gainsville without violating any new moral commitments to a better life Kiffin has now supposedly made.
For well balanced individuals, home is where you lay your head. Your mental well-being is not tied to a geographical land area.
Also, it's not near as much turmoil and aggravation or hassle to move when you are a multi-millionaire, not to mention another university taking care of your every need concerning housing, placement, and adjustment.

Coaches have egos and want to win. Does he want to win championships or be a playoff contender?

I don’t think he leaves there bc he’s going to be able to be 1 of 12 teams in playoffs.
Under the old model, being 1 in 4 or 1in 2, maybe you leave. Now with NIL and the 12 team playoff, most SEC jobs are resourced well enough to be one of 12 IF you don’t spend all your time golfing as a head coach.

The Stricklin complaint is
It’s not just Strickin, Florida currently has no president, whereas Ole Miss has Boyce who has been nothing but accommodating.
I’d also add that Kiffin has built a remarkable brand at Ole Miss that’s unique to him. He wouldn’t be able to recreate this at Florida or anywhere else.

Kiffin seems in a good place, professionally and otherwise in his life.
He has a great opportunity to create a lasting legacy as The Guy at Ole Miss.
He’s also probably earned himself some added goodwill and patience in Oxford if he were to stumble backwards for a couple of years record-wise.
Or he could go to Gainesville and be the Next Great Guy after Spurrier and Urban.
As excited as Gator fans would initially be, that goodwill and leash would tighten up pretty quick if he’s not beating Georgia, getting playoff bids and competing for Natty’s within 2-3 years. That’s just the way it is at the traditional trophy schools.
I know what I would choose if I were Kiff but Lane’s always marched to his own drum. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
