Long time reader from up in MA. It seems like everyone said two years ago — and still does now — that you don’t want to be the coach that follows the legend; you want to be the coach who follows the coach after the legend. Because of that, do you think any of the names that turned us down would now be interested in KD was let go after this season?

NOTE: I realize the buyout is a lot, and thus, it’s not likely. However, I just wanted to see what people think.

I don’t think anyone for sure turned us down besides Sark. From what I was told(and believe) feelers were put out to Sark, Lanning, Norvell, and DeBoer. Sark was always going to stay at Texas. DeBoer was the 1st choice for Byrne and the other two negotiated better contracts without ever really being offered.

I don't want any of the coaches we allegedly targeted tbh.

Then... you want Dabo. He knows the culture and is a part of it

What about schuman? Saban guy, learning under Kirby, just as Kirby learned under Saban. I realize the buy out thing, but it may be a bit more feasible with a guy who’s never been the head ball coach before. Meaning he may not require the money as a “big name”.

I think Georgia DC Glen Schumann will get a serious look. If it HAS to be a guy who either is a HC or has been a HC, maybe Iowa State HC Matt Campbell.

Probably a home run hire would be Houston Texans HC Demeco Ryans although he probably would prefer to stay in the NFL.

Kalen makes more than Demeco, who doesn't get a whole lot of respect in the NFL imo.

Jim Leonhard is in Demeco mold if we want a sure bet NOW.

He coaches under a defensive guy. How do we know he's capable? At least Jim Leonhard coached under offensive guys.

I think you have to start with Kirby, Dabo, and Sark - in some order. Overwhelmingly likely they say no. But you try to offer them a contract that at least makes them think about it. Make them say no before you move on to the next tier of candidates.

Jimbo Fisher and Jon Gruden have been mentioned by Sirius XM. I know that people hate Jimbo and Gruden hasn’t coached in college football for decades. Who knows.

Read my last sentence in the reply. “Who knows”. Anything would be an upgrade over what we have right now.

Gruden would be a terrible hire. Jimbo Fisher at the right price is worth considering if we're having to pay a Jimbo-size buyout. I don't think he's a great hire either but that may be the type of direction we have to go. You know he understands competition in SEC football and he's always been a good recruiter. That's what I'm talking about when I mentioned a "Coach O type hire" last night: a SEC HC retread who has a different disposition than the current regime.

Kirby - dream on. Dabo - Won't play the game. Sark may not have embarrassing losses, but he has no big wins. 2x loser to Georgia last year. 2x loser to OSU. Lost to DeBoer at Washington. He beat Saban once. Wow.

Just want to add, I'd prefer we not end up with a coach like Jimbo Fisher but I don't think people understand how curtailed the budget for the next coach will be if we have to fire the DeBoer this offseason. Taking an upside promising young assistant or veteran retread who has East of the Mississippi power conference coaching experience are probably the plays in that scenario. Either option would be value picks because they either want their break or simply to get back into the game.
