Was Tennessee right or wrong for not paying Nico?

Not morally, but business. Was the 1-2 million dollars that big of a deal? The Vols may lose more than that if they have a mediocre season. He may not be great but he is no worse than Carson Beck who made 4.3 million.

I disagree with how he left, but I have no issue asking for more. I would. It will be interesting how this plays out.

I don’t think it was the money, but him holding out and not showing up to practice. At that point you have to let him go. Bc other players will start doing it if u allow it to happen without consequences.

I think it was the fact that he threatened to sit out the bowl game last year, plus the absurd ask this year. I assume they wanted to rid themselves of a potential locker room issue

Maybe if you’re worth it. I pretty sure he took a pay cut.

the TN QB was 10th in the SEC in pass YPG - behind Brady Cook and Payton Thorne among others -

the TN QB was 7th in the SEC in Pass Rating - behind LaNorris Sellers DJ Lagway and Payton Thorne among others -

I would laugh your arse out of my coach's office if you walked in and asked me for more based on those numbers -

In his situation? With zero leverage?

You’d be shown the door too.

UT's coaching staff didn't think he was worth what he was asking, and the way he went about asking may have factored into that. As we all saw, the rest of the market agreed.

So what’s next? A player holding out the week before the season starts or the week of a big game? We sure don’t want to open that door.

I agree with this. Up til then, he was not wrong in asking for more, but once he skipped practice, he had crossed a line.

He had zero leverage in the situation to rationalize doing what he did. Just like Shadeur Sanders' situation. People need to learn to read a room and know when they have leverage in a situation and when they don't have any. These two idiots had zero leverage in their respective situations and walked into the meeting as if they had all of it and got their a$$ handed to them.

I doubt but a few would try this unless the portal were open, but a UNLV QB did this, so you have a point.

Some say Nico and a few of the Tennessee players tried to hold out before the playoff game, but I do not know if this happened. Perhaps some Vol fans can answer this.

I think it was important for UT to draw a line in the sand. We already have "free agency" in college football now. This, at least, may have kept the price down a little.

The difference there was the UNLV guy was claiming he wasn't getting paid, that's different than asking for more.

I love how everyone thinks this action by Tennessee has stopped it from happening again. It will keep happening because so many of these kids are 99% in it for the money. The next one will be by a star player who is a heisman favorite or going to be a top draft pick, and the team will probably cave. It's just like the opting out of bowl games. One guy starts it and the next thing you know, it is the standard.

And why wouldn't they? The NFL has players who hold out from practice every preseason.

He lost to Arkansas. Think about that. Then ask yourself if he was worth an ADDITIONAL 2 mil...

Then don't fricking post again, because this shite is retarded.

For asking for a raise? People ask for them all the time. Most get turned down or receive less than they wanted, but nothing wrong with trying.

As for Nico, he left. Once he missed the spring game, it was obvious he was leaving. They didn't fire him.

We all know the story, but the only thing I am asking is if Tennessee will be better off with or without Nico.
