If its NOT Ty Simpson I look for him to portal out and the same could be said for Austin Mack.

If it is Mack. how does Keelon Russell view it given how young Mack is? And, if we play the Freshman, are we down to one scholarshipped QB after spring?

IMO we will be looking for QB's in the portal.

If you were to assume everyone would leave because they seem to have lost the competition then why would you assume someone would want to come in? Seems like a flaw of logic.

I don't think so. Not in this day and age,Simpson is running out of eligibility. Mack knows theres a big time QB recruit there now expecting to play.

How long will the recruit sit? And if he decides to go the grad transfer route, I even saw an article suggesting we could be a good idea for Quinn Ewers. though I think Ohio State would buy him.

Kids jumping team to team multiple times a year in the portal defeats the old pastime of keeping up with recruiting. At least in the NFL you know a guy in under contract for several years but in college nothing is guaranteed. I formerly followed recruiting very closely but now seems like a waste.

Honestly fall camp is when it’s time to get interested now and where the season is over just tune out until next August. Teams will massively shift from year to year which is a shame because one of the things that made college great was watching a guy come in and eventually doing something great (Mac Jones for ex).

A lot depends on their NIL money. Making good coin to sit the bench for a year or so or go test the portal might see you playing at Troy or South Alabama. Not bad schools but not the Bama's of the world either

Man, im not gonna sit around and worry about what a bunch of college kids might do. It doesnt seem like a good use of my time or energy. I damn sure cant do anything to control it.

I guess i could donate my whole salary to the collective in hopes it will get us another five star or convince one to stay. But im not.

Giving Alabama's extreme lack of experience at such a critical position, why not bring in a proven portal QB for a year?

Might lose Ty, but most likely going to lose him anyway unless he starts. He is unproven, what is the team losing if he does leave? QB will make or break the team next year. A proven QB could be the missing piece.

The moment I realized that this might actually be required for fanbases of a lot of these schools was the moment I decided to de-emphasize college sports in my life. Very few have a Phil Knight or multi-billionaire oil tycoons at their disposal.

We keep hearing about the need for "guard rails", but it only seems to be spiraling futher out of control.

Like who?

According to the On3 Transfer Portal Tracker for QBs these are the only players in the portal not committed/signed/enrolled right now:

CJ Ogbonna - Buffalo
Harrison Bailey - Louisville
Chandler Rogers - Cal
Jaden Rashada - Georgia
Isaiah Velez - ULM
Earl Woods - Kennesaw State
Zevi Eckhaus - Washington State

I'm not advocating for us to bring in a proven QB to start next year, but Kyle McCord is declaring for the draft instead of trying to get another year of eligibility. I'm sure someone with enough money could entice him to come back and pursue a waiver for another year of eligibility

It's useless to keep up with recruiting because most of that class will be transferring out after the first season. I used to love keeping up with it, but now I don't even bother.

There will be a pile of them in the portal after spring practice. We should have some cash given that the LANK crew by and large have left the building

We might be looking to add one QB for depth in the portal because 3 is pretty light. I would be shocked if Ty isn’t starting next year. We don’t need a superstar to win games with what we have coming back, just take what’s there. Hell, Will Howard is carving teams up for the most part and he’s about as average as they get but he’s just playing smart.

At some point you have to let an inexperienced guy start unless you’re going to bring in a portal guy every time you need a new QB.

Well, I think the coaches have to be tactful in how they go about this. I don't think it benefits the program to name a starter in the spring or coming out of spring. I think you drag it out into fall camp at the very least.

I do agree with you that there is real potential to lose a QB in the spring portal if they realize they are clearly behind.

Best case scenario is things play out like 2020.

Bryce was the shiny new addition to the roster and Mac was the long tenured veteran. Mac won the job, Bryce learned the playbook and things worked out well for us.

My hope is Ty wins the job, performs really well next season and then we have a true QB battle between Keelon and Austin for 2026. Yes, the loser of the battle will likely leave, but we'll be in a good spot for at least two years with the winner.

Gotta sign two QBs this cycle though.

Ideal. You keep three on the roster for this year. Mack and Keelon would both be on the roster going into spring 26.
