Why do people say Ohio State "bought" this team?

They took 7 total transfers last offseason and lost 25.

Keenan Nelson - Backup, no statistics

Julian Sayin - Backup

Will Kacmarek - Backup, 8 catches

Quinshon Judkins
- Ole Miss fans said he was a locker room cancer

Caleb Downs - Good player

Seth McLaughlin - Bama fans said he sucked, suffered a season ending injury in November

Will Howard - Transferred because he was going to lose his starting job at Kansas State

So three starters is "buying a team"?

Coping mechanism & a fundamental lack of understanding of what OSU actually did - which was spend a lot of money to bring the guys already on the roster back for another season.

That's how we utilize our NIL as well.

In the NIL era, that will be the stock excuse to diminish the accomplishment of whoever ends up winning the natty that season.

Because people are losing their minds about everything. Ohio State paid to bring guys back and got the biggest gift of the season when Saban retired and Downs fell back into their lap.

It lets the "college football is going to hell" and "the world is going to hell" crowd to chime in and get their fix.

America's newest favorite pastime is trying to convince other people on the internert that everything sucks now and the everything used to be so much better and the world is going to hell.

It is rumored that Ohio State has spent the most on NIL this season. On3 estimates they spent the most. Ohio State’s AD Bjork has bragged about it. So it isn’t a stretch to believe that Ohio State has the highest paid roster in college football.

When a team outspends all of their competitors it is natural that people will say they bought a championship. Because they largely did.

I agree if that's what people mean.

If what people mean is they spent a good deal more on NIL than others meaning they were able to keep their roster intact because they could afford it and also add key players. Downs is more than just good and was offered nearly double what Georgia was giving.
The word is they spent more than anyone else did. So it's similar to what MLB fans say about the Yankees or Dodgers when they win it all.

They spent it on retaining their roster. The implications flying around are that they went out and raided other rosters. That simply isn't true.

They didn’t buy it. They retained a lot of draftable players from last year for a run like this. Next year it will be a completely different team as they’ll only return 5 starters.

Profound insight here. Very true. We should all keep this in mind.

Everyone pays HS redcruits now. Thats the whole reason Quinn Ewers went there his freshman year. Paying players isnt just transfer players

Without NIL Egbuka, Henderson, Jackson, Sawyer, Simmons, Tuimoloau, Williams, Burke, and maybe Ransom/Igbinosun all go pro last year. And Judkins, Howard and Downs aren't on the team either.

They’re the only team that retained so much depth by paying the players enough to stop them from going pro. I’d say that’s more “buying a team” than paying transfers. Even in NIL didn’t exist but the portal did, those same players may end up on their new teams. Ohio State’s guys all forgoed the draft not to win a title, but because Ohio State paid them more than they’d make on their rookie deals

That plus adding Caleb Downs. They also added a Rimington winner. QB addition was meh but he can still win them games.

The retainer money definitely mattered more. They have a hungry team who has been through a lot together.

pretty much all we did. any team that recruits at a high level is going to end up spending a lot of money down the road to keep them. pretty far from being a portal team. one of the least "portal" teams out there.

It’s also what people say about Saban and bama in 2009. And it’s accurate.

A team that started like 14 former 3-stars like Cory Reamer and Javier Arenas?

It is when those starters wouldn’t be there that quickly without NIL or the portal. But in the end, it really doesn’t matter because everyone has that same opportunity

Because the Buckeye NIL leaked that their total commitments were 20 million to the football team. It was a flex that sort of backfired because the public took it as "buying a team."
