This is him kind of admitting Jalen Milroe fricking sucks.
I wish we would have made the switch to Ty after the Tennessee debacle

Oh, he knows. He saw the same things we saw all season. I'm sure he can't wait to get his own guy in there. This season was probably super frustrating for him seeing his qb throw it to the other team.

While Keelon is an extremely talented QB, he is also very consistent in his play.

Which one will be "his" guy? The one that followed him to Bama or the one he recruited and signed a few days ago.

I love that DeBoer basically said what we all knew. As politely as possible, but he said it.
Now, it’s time for him to fix it, and I’m certain he will.

I'm sure it was frustrating from day 1. He arrives in Tuscaloosa ready to instill his culture, and someone tells him about LANK, and oh btw Mr. Lank who's the leader of the team can't pass or read a defense. Have fun!

I think DeBoer would prefer a guy who can process and find the open guy over athleticism or even a strong arm. A quick release is probably high on the list too.
Milroe is a talented guy in a lot of ways but he is talented in all the wrong ways for what DeBoer wants to do. Tua would be the ideal guy, but I think even Greg McElroy would be a huge upgrade for what Milroe's skillset is for this offense. I do wonder what Kiffin could have done with Milroe at the helm if he were OC.

This COULD have been done then.
I remember thinking in January, “cool, we’ll get a qb competition, I mean that generally happens when a new coach comes in.”
Fast forward to April, the Mullet Toss in OB, and it’s really the first time we see DeBoer outside of the university… Jalen is “the starter” and captain already… I was like woah, how’d that happen?…
Milroe spoke like a politician, and when interviewed it was HIS team. I kinda felt then, damn…DeBoer wtf?

I'm willing to give it a pass for a bunch of reasons, the main one being DeBoer walked into a locker room where he had to make some really hard choices to not completely start from scratch this season in terms of the roster and look at a really ugly year 1 that immediately put him on shaky footing.
I have to imagine they decided that keeping intact the general leadership structure of last year was a very big deal in terms of keeping the team together as he and his staff navigated their first year. They saw Jalen's skillset, knew it wasn't really what they wanted, but also knew they could do some stuff with him to help win games (and didn't see another QB who was just THAT much better anyway). So they made the best of a difficult situation, rolled with Jalen for the year as they established the rest. Frankly, they almost threaded the needle with it.
Now, the roster knows them, they feel good about the building being THEIRS and they have 25-35 kids (including transfers) coming in that came there to play for them. I'm guessing they can be much more demanding in doing things entirely their way at this point than they could have in January 2024. JMHO.

I was screaming this during the game. Too bad that DeBoer didn’t man up and make the change. Oh well.

Thanks for sharing. This actually makes me feel better heading into the offseason.

I think his other comment about "retention mode" also is understandable.
But midway thru the season and in particular games he had all the authority and control to make changes.
He did not so in a sense his comment is a excuse for his deficiency as HC "this" season.
We will see if KD becomes more assertive in his command decision making in.year 2 and beyond.

This presupposes that he thinks Simpson can run his offense.
Some people on this board have blasted DeBoer because he “didn’t adapt his offense to the personnel he had.”
This stuff doesn’t work that way. When you hire a coach, you hire his way of doing things. You hire his “stuff.” And you have got to give him a chance to get his people in to do his “stuff.”
And as someone pointed out in another thread, the offense is his “stuff,” it wasn’t Grubb’s at UW. Grubb was just an extension of what DeBoer wanted.
The problem is the expectation of our fans that we play for the big trophy every year, no exceptions, so there’s no allowance for a new person with new “stuff” to come in and get situated.

I don't know how you could say that. He basically ran a completely different offense than he ever has - and that includes his time at Fresno with a QB that was more run oriented.

DeBoer totally changed the offense to fit Milroe. Last year Penix had 8 yards rushing! Penix had 28 or more passing attempts in all but one game last year whereas Milroe did that once.
