Why can't anyone money whip Gonzaga's coach?

Mark Few's record at Gonzaga is stupid good:

And, ho-hum, just beat down Kansas today. Only thing Few is missing is a Natty.
Imagine what he could do at a program with greater resources. I guess Spokane and the PNW is that nice of an area to live.

He’s 61 and set where he is. Why leave?

I’ll never forget when we whipped their arse in Seattle a few years ago.
And I’m not even trolling, that was just literally an amazing game.

Believe it or not, not everyone is motivated by more money. Some people in life actually find the perfect job, and place, for “them”. They aren’t concerned with what others think are better jobs. They have the best job in the world, for “them” and enjoy life to its fullest.

Weak conf, weak sos, but motivates the team in the tournament. He’d have a rougher path at a bigger school with more work and competition

He’d be in Austin had Terry not gone to the Elite 8 last year.

Nice! I actually was thinking about editing my post — after that Alabama game, Gonzaga only lost one more regular season game (to St. Mary’s), then got bounced as a #1 seed to Arkansas in the Sweet 16.
Pretty cool that they finished 28–4 on the year with two losses to SEC teams.
By the way, their other loss was to Duke, who Arkansas played in the Elite 8 that year. Alabama ended up dropping one to Notre Dame in the First Round.

Are you saying areas in Louisiana and Alabama are better than Spokane?

He’s only ever been at Gonzaga (all the way back to a grad assistant) and he’s a big West Coast guy (grew up in Oregon, attended University of Oregon, moved to Spokane in the 80s). He’s a big outdoorsman and fly fisher as well.
If he didn’t leave Gonzaga for UCLA, he isn’t going anywhere. He’s much like Coach K in that regard once he got to Duke.

I’d actually think lesser of him if he left there for money. What he’s doing there is pretty damn cool.

Not to mention he currently is at a top power who is capable of winning it all ever year and getting any recruit in the country. Not many better jobs than Gonzaga right now.

Then Spokane is definitely the wrong place to be for him. Those are two different planets.
Some people realize they have a good thing and are happy with what they have. He might be one of those.

We used to call it Spokompton, but I hear it’s gotten better

People watch guys like Shaka smart go chase money, can't make better players as hungry as they could at the smaller school and it falls flat. Making a million in a smaller town where you dominate the school and have no pressure on you is worth quite a bit. I wouldn't dare move to Washington but some people love it there.

Yeah Spokane and Seattle are something like 300 miles apart and have a very different "feel" to them.

Not many schools have the athletic department resources that Gonzaga has either. They have a state of the art basketball training center (Volkar Center for Athletic Achievement), private Dornier 328 turbo fan jet for the Coaching staff's use, a 76 passenger 737 for away games, and the list goes on. Since 1998 they have invested over 1.5 billion into capital improvements at the school which has largely transformed Spokane.
