The entire article details the timeline between the day Saban retired and Deboer hired, but I found this quote telling and more than a little sad.

quote:

"I want to be clear that wasn't the reason, but some of those events certainly contributed," Saban said of his decision to retire. "I was really disappointed in the way that the players acted after the game. You gotta win with class. You gotta lose with class. We had our opportunities to win the game and we didn't do it, and then showing your arse and being frustrated and throwing helmets and doing that stuff ... that's not who we are and what we've promoted in our program."

Once back in Tuscaloosa, as Saban began meeting with players, it became even more apparent to him that his message wasn't resonating like it once did.

"I thought we could have a hell of a team next year, and then maybe 70 or 80 percent of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I'm going to play because they're thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me?" Saban recounted. "Our program here was always built on how much value can we create for your future and your personal development, academic success in graduating and developing an NFL career on the field.

"So I'm saying to myself, 'Maybe this doesn't work anymore, that the goals and aspirations are just different and that it's all about how much money can I make as a college player?' I'm not saying that's bad. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying that's never been what we were all about, and it's not why we had success through the years."

So things got tougher and he realized he had less power than he used to, so he quit?

I wonder what younger nick saban would say to that response.

Players are all entitled and making bank, so listening to the coach, even a multi national championship winning coach is not important.

Expect things like this to continue to get worse.

I don't remember Saban ever turning down any of those new contracts.

NIL removed some of Bama’s advantages. Plain and simple. I’m not a fan of NIL, but we all know that Bama players were getting paid before and got away with it more than many other programs.

I don't blame him for not wanting to deal with that after the career he's had. Roster and NIL management has to be brutal with all of the changes.

Saban was famous for complaining about changes, but then adapting to them and mastering them, no doubt a big part of the success he had over the years.

Sounds like NIL was finally one change he didn’t like and wasn’t going to adapt to. And I don’t blame him, ride off into the sunset and enjoy your later years as the best to ever do it. Enjoy retirement.

NIL and the portal have made coaches work overtime to keep players on rosters and I don’t fault him one bit for not wanting any of that and bowing out.

Good for him. I get it, and I agree with him. Hope he has a happy retirement.

Thanks for your contributions to CFB Coach Saban.

The world of college football has changed so drastically. It is a completely different game post NIL and transfer portal. I can’t blame a guy in his 70’s for not wanting to learn how to manage and coach a completely new game.

Somebody mentioned what would a younger Saban do. He would probably do like he did in the past as the game evolved. He would adapt and after a little trial and error he would be the best in the game. Just like he did in the past. But at 72 I think he just said “frick it, I don’t have it in me”. I can’t blame him.

I know it’s just a message board, but if you are going to talk about education, at least use proper punctuation!

He would go work in his Dads garage. Saban is seeing first hand what we are all seeing on the field. Less pride, less commitment, less excitement for team success. You can love him, hate him or merely respect him, but he is the bellwether that things are not great in the CFB landscape. Your team may or may not be impacted now but it will be.

As an LSU fan, I love what Kelly is trying to do...but I am concerned he is about 15 years too late to build and maintain a program in the manner he is trying.

No question the portal is over-used. I'm waiting for the statistics that show the vast majority are not picked up. Most, that find a home, trade development, stability, and education for a short-term pop that is spent quickly. Unfortunately, it's the travails of youth. Will they eventually wise up? Doubtful...

He has signed the #1 and #2 classes the last 2 years, and NIL has been around for 3 years. I suppose, though, that the players are getting more demanding about getting paid, and when it becomes more important than team, and playing to win titles, I guess it's a clear why coaches are going NFL. The UCLA and Boston College coaches are only 2 examples. Sad to see it, but I am confidend it will eventually all get worked out.

When Milroe blew up at the OC, when informed he wouldn't start the USF game, and several receivers, linemen, and blocking backs all happened to have bad games, I wondered how an old school coach would take that. Now, in restrospect, I bet it was just another thing among many things that impacted his decision to retire.

Good article.

anyone with 2 functioning brain cells to rub together could see that this is where CFB would end up as soon as you starting allowing players to get paid.

maybe he shouldn't have been handing out bags of cash and making promises he couldn't keep
