Eli Gold tells @953thebear that he is "healthy as a horse."
Gold said it was the University of Alabama's idea for him not to call road games last season.
Eli Gold, 70, said he expected to call Alabama games "for another decade or so." He said he accepted a job calling play-by-play with a professional organization that will be announced tomorrow.“

What happened, I thought he was beloved at Bama?

Alabama has another play by play guy that is objectively better by a pretty wide margin. The better performer is getting the job at this point. Will happen to all of us at some point. Age is a bitch.

More than TV announcers but less than you might think. He misses some calls (esp. lately probably due to his last illness). He's definitely iconic but he ain't no Larry Munson. I do wish him the best. He was a helluva hockey and NASCAR announcer in his prime.

We're all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the children's game, we just don't... don't know when that's gonna be. Some of us are told at eighteen, some of us are told at forty, but we're all told

Radio must be alive and well these days. Frankly, since wifi, I have lost contact.

So let me get this right.
All the opposing fans laughed at Eli and called him slow and called him the "next Verne," but now they're championing him as the greatest of all time and Bama is evil and bad because they cut him loose?
Some of y'all need to get your story straight. You look silly.
Eli was the man, though. I, for one, ALWAYS loved his voice. I grew up in Tuscaloosa and many people along the way in my life never really took to his style or his voice itself. Always annoyed me.
He has such an iconic voice. But I do agree, his last year was certainly an eye opener (sad) for his performance review. I hope he proves everyone wrong, dusts himself off, and goes and kills it at whatever he does next.

I appreciate the hell out of what he brought to the Tide broadcasting for +30 yrs and I'll appreciate what Chris brings to the broadcast going forward.
Stay healthy Eli.

His excitement was at an all time low this past season. Listen to his call on the final play of the iron bowl lol

Sounds like a similar situation when we had Hawthorne clearly on his way out here and we went with Chris Blair who has been objectively just much better at his job than Hawthorne was at the end of his career here.
Now Hawthorne wasnt forced out I dont think but his age was clearly showing in frequent missed calls. Think he was 71-72 when he retired from LSU playcalling duties.
In his final years here almost damn near every fly out he thought was out the damn park in baseball.

Eli has been somewhere between below average to awful at his job for a decade now. Alabama has tried their best to get him to realize that and gracefully step aside (he's 70 years old), but he has refused. We have an excellent guy ready to take over who the fanbase is extremely familiar with and loves (and is great at the job), but Eli absolutely decided he was going to make them fire him/not renew him.
We just had the greatest 15 year run in college football history and I can only think of 2-3 plays where when I want to watch a clip I make sure to find the clip with Eli's call. That's laughable, and doesn't even account for the fact that he is awful at the mechanics of calling a football game (down and distance, time, tone of voice matching the import nature of what just happened). I think we all thought Eli was a great dude who loved Alabama and was a professional, but it always sounded like some guy from Westwood One was calling our games while Auburn had Jim Fyffe, Tennessee had John Ward and Georgia had Larry Munson. Chris Stewart fits much more in that mold - pretty professional but absolutely willing to homer it up a bit and let you know who signs his paychecks.
Eli can act however he wants about this, but if he keeps deciding to throw a hissy fit then his reputation with the fanbase is going to take a serious nosedive.

I love how all these fans of other schools are so in love with Eli now. You just know they are sincere in their feelings.
2 weeks ago they couldn't stand the ground the man walks on. This place is just a childish troll fest.

He’s no different than a coach or AD. If he is bad at his job, he doesn’t get renewed

Also two weeks ago- Nobody criticized Eli. Eli was an icon. Eli was scheduled to return for 2024.

I understand people have pride and egos, but if he’s saying his health had nothing to do with the noticeable drop in quality of his game calls the past few seasons then I’m even more convinced parting ways was the right move
Wish he’d exercise a bit more grace

At least the third thread in Alabama’s former PBP guy not getting retained.
The obsession has never been higher!

Lot of threads about the play-by-play guy for a middling football team that'll be lucky to finish .500 this season.

I clearly recall many rival fanbases mentioning what an arrogant man Eli Gold was and how he "fit" right in with arrogance of the Bama fanbase.
NOW they're in love with the Legend Eli Gold.
