The B1G would be hard pressed to produce 4 playoff quality teams most years.

Of course it was. There should just be 12 at large bids and pick the 12 best teams. The conference tie ins are there to fix something that wasn't broke to begin with. But I have to laugh that this was actually tried.

I just used their CFP ranking to show who would be skipped. Interesting that if you went with the 4+4+4, there would be playoff teams that lost to Kentucky and Mississippi State, two bottom half SEC teams.
Ole Miss and Penn State are in in 5+7 model, out in the 4+4+4 model.
Another proposal was 3 from SEC, 3 from Big Ten, 2 from ACC, 2 from Big 12, 2 at-large. That would suck.
The 5+7 model gives the SEC a great chance at 3 teams every year, a good chance at 4, and an outside shot at 5.

It was probably more of a threat so that they wouldn't hold to the 6+6 model.

I swear the SEC and Big Ten Commissioners are wanting to build a junior NFL.
I love the SEC and I'm not sure how any college football fan would've been okay with their proposal.

I’d say 70% of the time 4 of those teams are top 12 going forward
For example
2023- big would have had 5 teams
2022-4 teams
2021-3 teams
2019-4 teams
2018-4 teams
2017-5 teams

That this is controversial is a joke.
You could add up the total Athletic Department income of the bottom 5 conferences and it wouldn’t even equal the SEC.
The only Joke here is that the B10 is getting 4 rather than 3. Here’s perfection:
SEC - 4
B10 - 3
ACC - 1
B12 - 1
G whatever - 1
Top 2 highest ranked remaining spots are at large.

They’ve demonstrated for years the fallacy of picking the “best” teams.
Unlike the nfl where you have 32 teams playing somewhat balanced schedules, in CFB you have 133 teams.
The 5-7 model is really pretty good. It creates an objective criteria of “winning your conference” for five of the bids, which will likely be four “power 4”
Champs and one “group of 5” champ. That means that, theoretically at least, all 133 teams (well, sans independents) have at least some shot at making the playoff.
