Agree, and the other question is does DeBoer’s current roster situation deter future coaches from jumping from program to program in the future?
I wouldn't think so in most cases. I think that the idea you can go to a new school and inherit a great roster is gone. Usually you are going to get a job somewhere where there is some turmoil.
The problem is you aren't going to have situations where Ryan Day takes over at Ohio State after the team goes 13-1 and gets to keep the roster in tact. If that happened today OSU would have had a big exodus too.
You can't leave a team in great shape anymore. When a coach retires or goes to the NFL that team is going to take a big step backwards.

If Harbaugh leaves for the NFL, do you think Michigan will have to hire from within?
My guess is that Harbaugh is doing exactly what is suggested in the OP. Michigan is toast if Harbaugh leaves and they don't have somebody like Kelly lined up.
Now, if Harbaugh is waiting so that classes begin, so guys can't transfer, AND they pull Kelly, then that would have been very well-coordinated and they would've really shown college football how it's done. And it would put lsu in a terrible spot, which wouldn't suck.

Yeah, locking them into UA and hiring a subpar coach is the right way

I would expect that this happened throughout the entire process. I think Saban, DeBoer, and others have been meeting with players since the retirement announcement (and since DeBoer's announcement as head coach). I honestly don't know if there was a different way to do this that wouldn't have resulted in the same team attrition due to the current CFB climate.

And that's what really pisses me off about him. He couldn't wait for his dream job, and took the job a freaking Tennessee. Make it make sense

This. The right people knew enough. Coach contemplated retirement last year and decided to give it another go. All of these coaches have the same agent. Listen to Kirby and Saban’s convo at midfield before the SECCG. I’m not saying they knew, but I don’t think they were blindsided.

It’s interesting to speculate about different scenarios but what’s done is done. DeBoer may surprise us and pull a rabbit out of his hat this fall and win a lot of games. Or maybe we’ll struggle. Transition and change is often challenging but Saban preached resilience, overcoming adversity and focus on the process. In whatever way we can do that as fans, that’s what we gotta do. Hang on tight and believe.

JMO but to me coaches who are willing to take the Alabama’s, Ohio State,s type jobs have enough self confidence that they feel they can recruit or coach up the difference.

Again, where is Jeremy Pruitt today if he stays with CNS to the end ?
Saban would have had at least one more national title with Pruitt, probably more. There were multiple games in the Golding era where Bama would have won if the defense could have forced even three punts over the course of the entire game.

And by then Deboer has a new contract in place. If he waited a month, we wouldn't have been able to hire a coach worth a shite.
Lane would take it in a heartbeat, no matter what month it happened.

I don't think he would anymore. I think he's way up in his feelings about being spurned. Especially after it came out he wasn't even on the list. Plus Byrne will never offer him.

Totally agree with you there, but those are destination jobs. What I’m saying is, if DeBoer is having this much tough luck out of the gate at somewhere like Alabama, it’s going to start happening everywhere, and most of these programs don’t have the NIL budget to keep up. I’m concerned the “stepping stone” jobs are going to become dead end jobs for coaches. Zach Arnett lost 20 guys to the portal after Leach passed away, and we saw the product State put out there this year.

The portal would still reopen, but it would be too late for players to enroll for spring semester at another program. This may have made a huge difference.
It’s not his job anymore.
Our new coaches shouldn’t even be sleeping right now. He should be saving players any way he can.

Well, BAMA just added two FBS G5 Head Coaches to the defensive staff, so we’re already there if you are just looking at job titles.

And he did himself no favors when he instantly fired the entire offensive staff and decided to switch from an Air Raid to a pro style offense. They literally had no tight ends on the roster and had a QB that had never taken a snap under center. I get you want to have your own program...but damn some guys are just too stubborn.

If anyone wants to point a finger at CNS, (which I dont suggest anyone should) you could say his inability to find 1 coach to keep, and mentor to take over one day would have been very beneficial.
How do you expect a coach to just sit and wait not knowing when that time will come? There's a reason schools stopped naming "Head Coach in Waiting." I think Saban would have loved to have a guy like Pruitt or Sark take over for him but how can you expect those guys to turn down major Power 5 jobs?

I'm not here to hate on Saban at all. But even when I left a little small managerial job I made sure that I had a transition in place. It's very much unlike him to not have a plan, and I have no idea what is going on, or why it happened so quickly.

Do you really think there was a snowballs chance in Hell of keeping Saban's retirement under wraps for any amount of time?

So then he would have to put together a staff right before Spring practice, and then the transfer portal opens again after Spring practice is over.
How is that a good option?
