Now that Slimebo has been fired, all kinds of names thrown out there as to who A&M will approach:

Dan Lanning at Oregon-would be my #1 pick if I was A&M but he has a $20 million buyout and supposedly Phil Knight is working on getting him a nice pay raise/contract extension/much higher buyout. If so, even though they just forked over $75 million+ to Slimebo, you have to wonder if they STILL have the kind of $$ to afford Lanning.

Kalen Deboer at Washington-Great coach but has absolutely zero history in the South or Texas. Has a sweet gig at Washington, not sure he'd come.

Mike Elko-Duke-I think they could get him but he would "Wow" pretty much no one. Yes, he's done pretty well at Duke but then again, the bar at Duke is pretty low.

Deon Sanders (?!?!?!)-I just don't see it. Besides, I think the jury is still out as to how good he is as a HC at the Division I level.

Still, it should be interesting to see what happens.

If I’m a&m with all the resources and money they have at their disposal I’m going to find out how loyal Kirby is to Uga and see how bad Uga wants to keep him.

If a&m is serious about building a championship program he’s the first one on the list

You have to call guys like Smart, Lanning, Deboer and any other hot name out there and make them say no. I think that Elko will be at the top of their list due to his previous work history there.

Urban Meyer would be my first choice.

Kirby has a $92 million buyout, I don’t think A&M is going to be calling, unless they want to spend that entire $160 million gift they got the other day in just buyouts.

Elko makes the most sense. Good coach. That Duke team is legit when at full strength. Probably would have beaten FSU if their QB wasn't injured.

That being said...it wouldn't be a splash hire and they're probably in panic mode with Texas entering the SEC and currently having some success. I don't see Elko competing on the recruiting trail with the elite programs. Lane Kiffin maybe? Whoever it is they'll make the exact same contract mistakes unfortunately. Smart people aren't in charge.

Everyone says A&M is a sleeping giant but they’ve been saying that for decades and they just kind of are who they are. I remember everyone swearing Fran was the last piece of the puzzle for them.

Maybe somebody will eventually unlock that program, but certain programs have the DNA and others don’t. I think their wierd, fake military culture is a big hindrance.

That's if they fire him. For him to leave it's only $5 million, but no way in hell he leaves Georgia for another college job.

If I was DeBoer, I would jet. It's impressive he has Washington playing this good, but I'm not sure that school can keep up with the Joneses of the Big Ten. Maybe he can, but competing against UM,tOSU, PSU, etc each year will be much more difficult than the Pac teams. The Big 10 is definately mich easier than the SEC, but at least he would have a lot more financial backing at TAMU than he has at Washington, and a contract that would most likely have him set for life.

Nothing fake about their military culture. It is one of 6 national military colleges. The other five colleges include The Citadel, the University of North Georgia, Norwich University, the Virginia Military Institute and Virginia Tech. Of course, I’m not including the service academies run by the US Government.

That has no impact on football recruiting. They've recruited at the absolute highest level and are possibly the best positioned for success of anyone in the NIL era. All it will take is a competent coach. Their problem is that they haven't had one of those since Jackie Sherrill.

I really think they end up with Schumann or someone very similar.

I would expect alot of turnover from the GA staff especially if they win it all again.

Elko would be my guess.

I am surprised though not to hear Bob Stoops name pop up. I think he is in his early 60s so has plenty of years left. Definitely can recruit the region.

Just because you have all the ingredients doesn’t mean you can bake the cake. I don’t disagree that they have a lot of resources that put them in a really good position, but they’ve had many of those advantages for decades and barely have anything to show for it. Coaches that have had success elsewhere underperform at A&M for one reason or another.

A&M really is pretty awful.....Soviet architecture set on a featureless plain in the middle of nowhere.....

I had to laugh at that characterization of their campus. I've been to most of the SEC campuses and A&M clearly has the ugliest campus that I've seen. I used to work with some A&M alums and they ranted about how beautiful A&M's campus is.

Clearly, they've never been to almost any other SEC campus. Still, regardless of the ugly campus, if you paid me enough money, I'd even live in New Jersey. Granted, it'd have to be for a crap load of $$ but for the right price, I'd go.
