Matt Campbell - is now the time and would we want him?

He had a down year last year, and there’s a good chance they finish 6-6 this year with the final two games against Texas and then @ Kansas State. He’s been very comfortable at ISU, but a down year followed by a 6-6 year could make him feel some heat and not as appreciated as he should be. Through the majority of his time there, he has made ISU a competitive and respectable football team. Over that time, top to bottom, the Big 12 has been the second or third strongest conference. Put him at Arkansas in a similar environment with similar expectations, but better facilities, more money, and more talent, and I think it’s likely he could field a team that could average 7 wins a year with a 9 win year every 4 years or so.
I’d rather go with him over a G5 newcomer.

I thought the narrative on him had started to shift more toward Purdy made him more than anything.

Campbell would be my number one choice. Not sure why he would leave for much higher pressure and expectations.
Even if they lose out I doubt he feels much heat. Iowa St. was absolute garbage for decades before he got there.

Campbell or Gundy. Similar situations in that neither is likely to elicit a bidding war from their current employer.

I love Gundy but the dude has a bunch of WTF losses like the game against UCF yesterday or getting blown out at home by S Alabama to start the year.
Our fans would go ape shite after anything like either of those.

We currently get our arse beat with no nice wins in between so I don’t see how it would be that big of an issue. Not immediately at least.
And like I said, we’re probably going to be dumpster diving to a certain extent on this hire. It’s that or hire some young coach with no experience that will almost definitely fail. There’s no great option either path we take admittedly.

Like I said, I love the dude. Great offensive mind and would love to see him on our sideline. He just has a habit of dropping and winning games he shouldn't.
I think he is a great cultural fit for us. Only thing that gives me pause with him is recruiting. He isn't great on the trail. Would have to work portal magic every year.

Would be lucky to have Campbell.

He has sucked since Brock Purdy left. So unless we get generational qb after generational NFL starter QB, no.

Get the Gussiah
SMU is 8-2.
Would placate the hardcore Guslims and likely avoid another holy war.

Every coaching search here his name pops up.
He's not coming to this dumpster fire.

Our NIL level donors were always Guslims.

Zero chance that dude could recruit any talent here anyway.

Same with James Franklin, another name that gets thrown around.

If we do, yall enjoy it but I am out. But I’m already halfway out on football anyway so no big deal I guess. This particular thou shall not bow to the false god of Gus.

What did he do other than be smarter than the people that are running our program after not getting his due for his part in winning the West? Is it simply a matter of taking Nutt's side over Gus?
There's some very real hatred for Gus, which I can get after the Auburn saga, but it's not like we endeared ourselves to him during the whole Nutt thing before that.
Until this point I've been anti-Gus more so because there were better options. Now it's to the point I'm willing to try anything. If only to get rid of this constant "what if?" scenario with these boosters.

He used his highschool players to get the OC job.
As soon as he's on campus, his backers start the push to have him become HC.
With all the mustain drama, he kept it at an arms length, didn't take up for mitch or correct the problems he could such as the jersey nonsense.
Real questions arise about the putrid game plan against LSU and collapse to finish the season.
Encourages his players to transfer and he bolts to the first job he can find.
2007 nutt and fired and who is the first mandatory interview?
Ends up at auburn as HC and uses the Arkansas job for leverage to pay raises and huge buyouts.
Recommends chaggy.
Gus has always been about Gus.

That's interesting. Didn't know about the sandbagging allegations. Although knowing how I felt back then, I would have 100% supported him replacing Nutt at the time. Granted I was like 16.

His backers claimed Nutt took back over the play calling.
Basically Gus and the Springdale crew were only the victims and had no responsibility in everything that took place surrounding them.
