American icon, US Olympic gold medalist and mother of LSU gymnast McKenna Kelly was hospitalized yesterday.
Thoughts and prayers from SEC nation as she recovers from a rare form of pneumonia.
Currently she is not breathing on her own and the family has raised close to $150k to help pay for medical bills per CBS morning news.

I just heard on TV that she isn't insured. Yikes!!

Wow, looks like she's only 55.
I would've thought she was much older than that, for some reason.

The insurance topic was questioned yesterday on tiger rant but it was actually mentioned by her daughter who started the funding efforts. It was even mentioned that she was not insured on the national news and even one of the anchors made this comment.
“For a woman who has been such and incredible American ambassador an icon in our country, you’d think she has earned the right to be fully insured by our nation”
I honestly can’t help but agree. But the situation doesn’t make sense although it’s none of my business.

She was a child when she shot to stardom. She was our best U.S. female gymnast at 14 years of age and won the Olympic Gold at 16. Hard to believe that was almost 40 years ago.

May have inadequate health insurance. She has been in ICU for a week apparently, very few people do that and come out financially healthy.
On top of that it does not seem like she has a regular gig. Does a lot of spokesperson type gigs and some TV commentary at gymnastic events but I'd bet she ain't ever earned a lot of money. Just a guess but I suspect leading the life of a celebrity is expensive....

Prayers for MLR’s full recovery. I’ve always loved gymnastics - I’m a little too young to remember Nadia but I vividly remember watching Mary Lou in the Olympics. She was amazing and that big smile made her easy to like.
It does seem insane she has no health insurance especially at the age of 55. I saw this in the article and I hope they step up:

And she can’t sue the Federal government or state government for mandating she get the inoculation that put her in this situation.

Sounds accurate, she divorced ex UT QB Shannon Kelley about 5 years ago after 25+ years of marriage. Kelley came from big money and made big money as a partner in an investment firm in Houston. Who knows how her financials have gone post divorce, but here's the house she currently lives in..

#1 I hope she fully recovers.
#2 It is amazing how many people in this country in their late 30s, 40s & 50s go through like like they are a 19 year old. We all pay out the nose because of people like this.

Why should "the nation" insure her?

I don't understand why someone like her wouldn't have the resources for at least a high deductible individual catastrophic policy if she wasn't eligible for a group plan. Obamacare should have been available to her even if she was uninsurable for a typical group plan.

This is why we need Universal health care like all civilized nations. Medicare for all.

I’m not saying ‘the nation’ should but ‘the nation’ has spent far more on far worse.

This topic is so stupid.
Of course she has the resources for a high deductible health plan.
I bet she bought an Obama care policy. Tried to use it. And then canceled it because they are crap policies.
And instead of spending more on a good policy, she choose uninsured (which 99% of the time looks like the better option than Obamacare).
My brother makes $300k/yr in finance. He is a Bobby Kennedy Democrat. And he canceled his Obama care policy because it's best use was as toilet paper. 3 month wait to see a doctor in the plan. He needed a sick visit and it ran him just under $1k out of pocket.
Mary Lou Retton knew what she was doing going uninsured. It was by design and deemed a better alternative than what ACA gave us.

Sorry to hear this, and I hope that she fully recovers. She signed one of her books I bought for my sister at a book signing in Austin back in the 80s after her Olympics wins. I remember she was super nice in person with a big smile…

Sorry to hear about Mary Lou. She was America's sweetheart back in her glory days and an extremely tough competitor. She did the USA proud. Hope she gets better soon.
Why is this topic on the rant? It does not belong here and just gave the political idiots a chance to turn it sideways and vent.
Get Well Soon Mary Lou.
