There comes a time. Watching Hey Coach. Speech and opening questions and comments were confusing not only to Saban but to the panel and everyone else.

I'm really going to miss Eli when he decides to hang it up. Dude is unequivocally the best PBP caller in CFB.
And I'm the only mother fricker who doesn't like Chris Stewart and thinks he sounds like an AM radio broadcaster for Tallapoosa County high schools. So I'm absolutely going to cringe when he's inevitably named as Eli's replacement.

You should change your name to Mike.

Who knows, maybe Eli will improve back to his old self?

Eli has been awful for a long time. His call of 2nd and 26 was a prepackaged, emotionless disgrace. He was bad before then and that should’ve been the end of it.

This doesn't get talked about enough. One of the greatest plays of all time and he read off a script like we were taking a knee up 17.

Agree. As a radio broadcaster, he is allowed to be a homer. I wish we could have heard the real emotion. He had the line, "And the Crimson Tide has once again ascended the college football mountain!" planned out way before that moment. They should've just gone crazy.

I think you'll find the opposite to be the consensus here.

I couldn't care less of all the hate Eli gets from some bama fans. I love his voice and play calling. Total king.

I respect Eli and have no ill will towards the man. There was a time I considered him an excellent PBP man. But, that time has long passed.

I doubt you're the only one, but I'm not with you. I love the way Chris calls a game.

I think Stewart does a fantastic job with basketball, but I don't like him as much for football.

I haven’t heard Chris do much football, except for some big play highlights that always seem to sound good.
But he is, without question IMO, an excellent PBP basketball guy. He’s a homer but still has respect for the other team and is rarely dogging officials (something a lot of radio guys can’t say).

There is a LOT of irrational hatred for Eli on this forum by extreme dumbasses who really just don’t have any basic listening and comprehension skills.

Chris is great with hoops. His brain is fast enough to keep up with a fast paced game. John Forney was by far the best football announcer in my memory. No disrespect to Eli, but by his tenure, and still today, I hardly listened to any games on the radio. I was at the game or watching on tv. As a boy in the 60’s, few games were on tv, and I was enraptured by Forney’s description of game action. He really could paint a picture.

Love Eli. I watch the game on TV with the sound muted. I have the radio on so I can listen to Eli. This last game I turned the radio on and it was Chris (I had forgotten Eli wouldn't be announcing away games). I couldn't follow what Chris was saying so I turned the radio off and listened to the TV announcers.

No you are not. I agree with you, even if Chris Stewart is a great guy...
But in my world, I would pay Kevin Harlan $5 million to broadcast everything Bama, including Sunday services.

I don't hate Eli. He's an icon.
However, he is demonstrably terrible at play-by-play.
I defy any of you to listen to Eli broadcast a game without watching it, and be able to accurately say for any given play what actually happened as it happened. It's not possible.
On another site, many years ago, I posted a sample of an Eli / Snake Stabler call during one of our games. It was an actual transcript of a play, and I've long since lost it, but it went something like this:
Eli: The Tide comes to the line, first and ten now. John Parker under center, with Coffee as the running back. Wilson handoff to Coffee BIG HOLE! Coffee churning ahead dragging tacklers before he's finally brought down.
Snake: Great blocking on the left side that time Eli Johnson and Smith got underneath and pushed the pile and it was just a great run by Coffee and let's see what Alabama dials up on second down now.
Eli: Wilson, drops back, looking to his right, not finding anything, scrambling around, fires a pass downfield that's ... INcomplete. Just off the hands of Julio Jones, who had a step on the safety but John Parker just couldn't connect with him.
Snake: A little confusion I think there on the pass Eli John Parker was looking for Julio to run an out route and he cut to the middle of the field and it threw off the timing and credit the safety with a great play there.
Eli: Wilson and the Tide facing a third and eight, now ...
Some of my frustrations:
- Where were we on the field?
- How did we go from "BIG HOLE!" to only gaining two yards on first down?
- Why did we go roughly two minutes without knowing how many yards we needed to gain for a first down?
Eli is great if you're watching the game at the same time you're listening to his broadcast. Otherwise, not so much.

Respect Eli but not a fan at all. He's more about telling you the colors of the uniforms than telling you play content. You think big play, 2 yard gain. You think 2 yard gain, 15 yard run. I think he likes Alabama, but it's a job to him. I like Chris Stewart because he LOVES Alabama! He shows it through his calls. Don't have to be a Homer, but let's hear the love not the profession.

Yeah Kevin Harlan is the best football radio PBP announcer I’ve ever heard. Somehow he can give you the most vivid details of a 4 yard dive play all within the time frame of the play. He effortlessly flies through dialogue like an auctioneer. It’s incredible.

I would love to hear your defense and reasoning of this take. I’ve never been more confused during a big play than when Eli is calling and “describing” it.
