Reggie White ran a 4.6 40 as a defensive end. He was like a Jadeveon Clowney on steroids. He was able manhandle offensive limeman while being almost as fast as a skill position player. My dad had a class with him at UT and had nothing but good things to say about him. A real legend it’s a shame he’s gone

I went to a youth retreat where he preached in the early 80s. "The Minister of Defense" wasn't just a nickname. This guy loved the Lord and was truly a caretaker of his fellow man. The world was a better place with Reggie White in it.

Thorpe was a good athlete but did ever face African American athletes? His achievements happened during segregation.
Thorpe nor Owens could choose who they competed against. If you want to play the cross-era game...

Be hard pressed to beat Hines Ward out at UGA....at least as a football player...dude played almost every position on the field except on either side of the line (for all I know he may have taken a snap or two, he did at most positions) and played at a very high level at all of them...and lead the SEC in popcorn sells 2 seasons...

Georgia had Ward...and Champ Bailey that were swiss army knives, capable of playing so many different positions. I never understood why so many people thought it made sense for Charles Woodson to win the Heisman in '97, but the closest Ward or Bailey ever got was when Bailey finished 6th in voting.

Perhaps an athlete who was just great...
Dr. Denton A. Cooley, a college basketball star at Texas in the 1940's, performed the first totally artificial heart transplant in 1969.
He founded the Texas Heart Institute in 1962 and continued performing surgery until his 87th birthday, remaining active as President Emeritus until the Monday before he died at age 96.
By age 50 he had performed more than 5,000 cardiac operations, including 17 heart transplants. It has been estimated that over four decades, Cooley and his associates performed an estimated 100,000 open-heart surgeries — more than any other surgeon in the world.

Bama kid.
Didn't he do it in German shoes (adidas?)? Seems like I recall a story about that or maybe borrowed shoes when someone stole his.

Quinn Grovey - Nolan said that Quinn probably would have been his starting PG in the late 80's

As far as an actual “athlete” DK Metcalf has been a good NFL player but ran a 10.3 against Olympic athletes at 6’4 235. Broke combine records for bench press, 4.33 40, etc. He was never the best player on his team at Ole Miss but as a straight up athlete he’s hard to top. Won the MVP in the celeb all star basketball game too but that doesn’t mean anything other than him being good at pretty much any ball he picks up
