It’s a fair question, as evidenced by TCU’s presence in the playoff. Nobody in America outside of the state of Texas thought TCU was one of the 4 best teams in the country last year, and Georgia proved they didn’t belong.

If you don’t win your division you shouldn’t make the playoffs. Period. I don’t care how tough the SEC is. End of story.

The expanded playoffs have guaranteed an SEC team holding the national title trophy every season from here on out.
The SEC will have 3 teams minimum / 5 teams maximum every single season. For the few years where Ohio State, Clemson, and FSU defeated ONE SEC team in a nail biter in the postseason — Those teams will now be subjected to having to play at least 2 SEC teams in the playoff and possibly even 3 depending on how they are seeded.
All the extended playoff may possibly do in the grand scheme of things is make the regular season irrelevant for the SEC champions as we may see an LSU team that finished 13-0, have to have a rematch with a 12-1 Georgia they beat in Atlanta or a 12-1 Bama they beat in the regular season and then lose in the title game.

Psychiatrists could write complete volumes on the inferiority complex of the LSU fan. It’s an amazing, yet sad and pathetic disorder. The main symptoms cause them to be able to do nothing but obsess about and post on anonymous message boards about Alabama and Texas A&M
Sad.

Are you really the best team if you lose and blow your shot? What a silly thing for him to say.

Maybe they should just give a bye to the 4 highest ranked recruiting teams.
Don’t have them play any actual games, just simulate it.

Alabama was the 3rd best team in the country last year but lacked the coaching on defense to get them there. People admonish BOB but it was really Golding that cost Alabama in their two close road losses. Could not get a meaningful 4th quarter stop whenever they needed it.

The reality of college football is that if you’re looking to select the best teams for a playoff, you might as well not have a playoff.
There have been many seasons where one or two teams were a “best” team and their competition in the championship/bowl/playoff games was massively inferior despite their record.
At least a playoff gives other teams a chance to pull the upset.

First, Nuck Ficky. He's an old whining narcissist.
Second, If Michigan had even showed up against TCU, we wouldn't have this conversation.
Third, STFU Ficky. People are sick and tired of hearing the "GOAT" making noises...

He's knows that's not true. UCF had 2 back to back undefeated regular seasons and didn't make the playoffs. Why? Because their strength of schedule sucked. Winning the most games is (and should be) a consideration. But it's not the only consideration and he knows this.

It's a criteria mix of best teams and most deserving. It has to be.
Otherwise let's just look at the recruiting rankings and five stars to pick the "best" because that's what he's saying

Saban is often right on these things. He’s seen a thing or 2.

A good playoff format is a MIXTURE of “best” and “most deserving”. Which is why in the history of forever most tournaments have “automatic” and “at large” bids. All this stuff is simple.

It's all about subjective opinions. Saban has a right to his subjective opinion. But he's just one guy. The playoffs are more about the average subjective opinion of the 13 or whatever it is selection committee members. He won't have to worry about it starting next year.

Let me say upfront that I don't think Bama belonged in the playoffs last year. But that does not invalidate his argument. I think last year proved that matchups can be the most important thing. For instance, UGA would have killed Michigan, but struggled against Ohio State, who lost to Michigan. UGA witch-slapped TCU who beat Michigan. The matchup might be as important as to how good a team is.
