We’ve gotten to know the Hawgs and Gamecocks over 30 years and they’re like old family now, and we’ve recently come to understand A&M’s affinity for gay porn and weird cheers, and we’ve done our best to ignore Mizzou, ‘cuz y’know, who fricking cares. I know a little about your football history because you’re a traditional power with Nattys, Heismans, all-Americans, etc. but I gotta admit I don’t know much about Sooner fan culture. Game Day traditions, cheers, game day culture…can you give the OG’s a synopsis?

They become the second most decorated football team in the SEC the moment their feet hit the door. Not going to ask you if you can relate.

I think SEC fan will be disappointed with OU "tradition" relative to what you are used to.

Things are rather chill out here on the plains. OU fans are rather reserved as we are somewhat paranoid about our rep as being "trashy Okies". Secondly, OU fans take the actual game more seriously than most. Meaning winning the game is way more important than the party. This is true for everyone but the students.

The result is that the crowd isn't terribly intimidating. Can get loud on occasion but it isn't sustained. Timeouts have no crowd energy. Everybody rests.

Pregame, the tailgating thing isn't huge. Partly because the University doesn't want the campus lawns being torn up. And partly because the people in the Campus Corner (entertainment) district want people down there.

Pregame about the only thing that happens is the band marches from the music building past Campus Corner, through campus and to the stadium. And we have a team "walk" which is very lame compared to SEC standards.

Pregame, OU crowds are early arriving. Probably our most "unique" tradition is throwing our opponents footballs out of the stadium (north end zone) while they are warming up. They also do this during the game. (Opponents are notified of this tradition and OU has "ball retrievers" and "runners" to get the balls back to the opponent."

Band entrance and fanfare is really cool. Probably the best thing we do.
Play opponents fight song if their band isn't present to kiss opponents arse and prove we aren't classless Okies. (sucks, we hate it and hopefully all SEC teams will bring their own bands).
Sooner Schooner is cool for little kids.
Horsepigs- Our costume mascots. Our own fans are embarrassed by them. Again, little kids like them.
Rufneks- Usually the bottom of the barrel guys on campus end and their GFs end up in this "spirit group," They dress up in red and white corduroy outfits. They shoot off red and white shot guns during the game.
Boomer Sooner chant across the stadium between east and west stands is our only "chant"
"Only One Oklahoma" video message before the team enters is usually pretty cool. Actual team entrance is pretty weak.
Seven Army Nation thing (or whatever it's called) before opening kick. Lame.
Chant OU!! while the kicker approaches and kicks the ball. Meh.

That's pretty much the size of it. Not a lot of gameday tradition compared to your standard SEC program. Oh, and we have fireworks and the LED light flashing stuff for night games now days.

The university ruined all tailgating when it started to make everyone buy tailgating tickets. So if you don’t pay you don’t party. As for the horse pig mascots they should be sent to Arkansas. Everyone here hates them

We don’t have any truly awesome traditions like the War Eagle (gonna be so cool to see that in person) but my favorite OU tradition is hooking up with Longhorn women in Dallas every first weekend of October. They’re literally starving for men.

The Sooner Schooner, the band playing both the Oklahoma song and BOOMER SOONER fight song, the Oklahoma flag performance, the “OU” chant, and the RufNeks are OU traditions.

Tailgating takes a hit I think because of the weather. Night games in November can be cold, and sometimes August in Oklahoma is well above 100 degrees.

SEC fans will notice the wind chill and wind factor, I can’t think of anywhere in the south with consistent winds like Oklahoma. OU fans shouldn’t be too focused on tailgating, that’s an SEC thing but instead should focus on Campus Corner and the south end zone.

I went to my first game in 1959. So, I have seen a bit. My son went to aTm, because they provided a scholarship. If I pushed, he would have gone to OU, but it would have cost me out-of-state tuition. aTm, was a good school for him.

We have our terrible posters, like any team. But for the most part, a couple of things. One if, you want talk about "what they are going to do", then leave that to your two Texas teams. We are not so much into that. Second, we don't give excuses when we lose, like Auburn and Florida did, when they lost to OU. Third, OU only counts AP nattys. I hope they never use the SEC method, but they would be in the teens. They only count conference championships, where they WIN the playoff, unlike a SEC texas team.

We moved from Texas to AZ two years ago and gave up our 40 yard line season tickets. We had a school president that almost killed a lot of the football school spirit and we have spent the last few years trying to recover. So, we are currently below SEC standards in that area. But we are aware of it and it will take us a few years to catch up to where we were, before David and Molly Boren.

The liar, TBOW, left the OU team in the most desperate state since the 90s. Especially on D and TBOW new it. The current OU D coaches were shocked at what the D players did not know, that they considered just basic football. That is why he was playing LSU against USC. LSU dodged a bullet, imo

OU fans (the true fans, not just internet fans) are considered pretty knowledgeable. I have, going back to my season ticket days, (even when we had season tickets to aTm, when my son went there), some good friends from across the country and we try to make an away game and home game a year. Me from AZ, a guy in northern Ohio and one in NC, come the farthest. They are great guys, imo.

Two coaches made a huge difference in the history. Bud Wilkenson had a TV show every Sunday where he taught the masses football. He was also early in playing black players. A couple of things about Switzer, is he always gave his players and assistance all the credit, but he was a great Offensive mind. Second of all, Mister Royal, who still holds one OU record, was until the day he died a racist. Even after he retired. (I know people who played golf for him). Barry, who grew up on the "other side of the tracks" as the son of a bootlegger, killed Royal, especially in the Houston area, until Daryl started reluctantly recruiting guys of color. Joe Washington, who is currently on staff at OU, was told by his dad/coach in Port Arthur, he could go to any school he chose, except texsa, because of the overt racism. Many a time after a game, I would congratulate a visiting family for coming to the game, and was told that they gave the excuse that they were watching a relative, but had traveled from California or New Jersey to finally be at a game in Norman, (all because of Barry's reputation) of playing players of color.

OU is not where they want to be, just like Alabama was not, the last couple of times OU beat them. But, many of us believe that possible by 26 or 27 we should be able to hold our own, if we can make the changes needed.

I have been to games in Bryant Denny. I went to the last game in Knoxville. I have been to Gainsville. And when we played LSU in N.O. The Alabama fans were great, some of the best I have been around. Knoxville was a great experience. Florida was good. I, like many of my friends, do not welcome the experience of playing LSU at night. Bunch of young people surrounding people over 65, threatening them and spitting on them is not what I consider an experience with a true Blue Blood team.

Speaking of Mizzou, some of their best teams since Divine was coaching there were beat by Bob Stoops. The Hogs have ignored us, forever. Most at OU felt it was because they felt that the potential of losing to OU was more than they wanted to deal with, recruiting wise. But, we really don't know why they ignored us. So that will be a bit different.

My question is for the SEC away game, next year, I am thinking Ole Miss.

I can tell you that OU fans are absolutely pumped about coming to the SEC. Gunga did a pretty good job of describing things. I will say that the tailgating will improve. Our AD and Brent Venables both made the comment the other night that every available blade of grass would be open for tailgating, so it's something we are working on. The Boomer Sooner chant back and forth between the crowd pregame is always good. In the end, we just want to compete with the best teams in the best conference in college football. Hopefully I get the chance to meet some of you when you come up to Norman. Can't wait for 2024.

I've always liked the fact that the Pride has a flag corps girl for every team in the conference, I am assuming that will continue. Also something that will get OU fans riled is the constant attention that Notre Dame gets for "Play like a champion today", OU actually had this sign and had the players hitting it as the entered the field back in the days of Bud Wilkinson. OU started it and has continued the tradition to this day.

That being said, OU fans are pretty chill, and don't have the entitled attitude you will find from Texass. OU has always felt that we took the scraps and did better than Texass did with its pick of the crop. OU has always done the most with the least as opposed to the least with the most. OU fans are proud, but like was said earlier, aren't much into telling you how good we are going to do and trash talking (except for some notable exceptions *Cough-Mojo Eraser-Cough**). We normally don't get involved unless specifically called out, as in about OU's rich history in football and other sports.
