re: Oklahoma fans, hows does the SEC weekly grind compare to the Big-12?
Posted by OilfieldSooner on 10/25/24 at 12:24 pm
there is absolutely no doubt it's harder, but we knew that coming in. Mind you, the offense being a dumpster fire and the injuries haven't helped at all, we always knew this would be much tougher. The Big 12 is built on speed and finesse on the edges. What has made the SEC so dominant is that they are built from the line of scrimmage back. Any team can win on any Saturday and that makes for great football, but it also means you aren't skating through to a playoff spot. If you ask, do you wish OU wouldn't stayed in the Big 12? Absolutely not! This is where the best football is played, the best stadiums, the best traditions, it's where the mark is set. I truly believe OU will benefit from this season and the way it's unfolded. You need to know what your deficiencies are so they can be corrected. It may take some time, but OU will adjust. I would much rather face this scheduled now instead of later to be able to be in the mix. I wouldn't change a thing and am so happy OU is in the SEC.

I'm absolutely pumped to be in the SEC. For years and years, OU fans have complained about the schedule and the kickoff times, as well as the general stigma that comes with being in the Big 12. You're taking the greatest conference in collegiate athletics (and has been for some time now) and adding 2 historic programs and 2 of the biggest brands in the country. Will it be tougher? Absolutely it will, but that is what we've been clamoring for, for years now. Iron sharpens iron and it has shown itself in the CFP where OU looked outmatched in size, strength, and speed. Being in this conference is what is going to push your team to greatness. There is no off week, no bum team on the conference schedule, just dogfight after dogfight every single week. There will be 9-3 teams in this conference that are better than any 10-2 or 11-1 team in the Big 12 or ACC. It's just the way it is. The passion, the pageantry, the biggest stage, the brightest lights can all be found in the SEC. Am i glad to be here? You're damn right I am, and I know most Sooner fans are just as happy and honored to be here as well. Let's get this thing started!!!!

Can't freaking wait. Seeing the SEC logo on the field is like a dream come true. Yes, this league will be tougher, but we've all been begging for this for years.

Based on the schedule and the hope that the defense is much better, I'll say OU goes 11-1
re: Oklahoma fans……I’m requesting a full explanation of what the hell happened last year

A lot has been said here that is accurate. Venables brought in a completely new defensive scheme and the talent on the roster wasn't able to adapt to the new calls and scheme. That's just part of it. The part nobody wants to talk about is that this team was losing ground in the strength and conditioning department. and it showed. The Strength and Conditioning program at OU had fallen in to shambles under Bennie Wylie. When Jerry Schmidt came back, our offensive and defensive lines were under weight and didn't have the strength needed to win those battles in the trenches. Wylie wanted speed and quickness and forgot to get these kids the size and strength they needed. Look at the TCU and Texas games. Yes, Gabriel was out, but that team got bullied by both TCU and Texas. There were 5 games (including the bowl game) that were lost by one score. IT was a rebuilding year and frankly, there's no excuse for what happened. Things seem better, but until we get to the season we just don't know. With how easy the schedule is this year, OU really needs to get to the CCG to show vast improvement before moving to the SEC.

I can tell you that OU fans are absolutely pumped about coming to the SEC. Gunga did a pretty good job of describing things. I will say that the tailgating will improve. Our AD and Brent Venables both made the comment the other night that every available blade of grass would be open for tailgating, so it's something we are working on. The Boomer Sooner chant back and forth between the crowd pregame is always good. In the end, we just want to compete with the best teams in the best conference in college football. Hopefully I get the chance to meet some of you when you come up to Norman. Can't wait for 2024.
re: Are Oklahoma Sooners fans regretting coming into the SEC?
Posted by OilfieldSooner on 6/19/23 at 10:23 am
All of my friends and other OU fans I talk to aren't regretting this at all. In fact, OU fans have been begging for years to get out of the dumpster fire that is the Big 12. Are we going to win fewer games? Yep. Will the competition be tougher? Damn right, but it's the hard/tough that make you better. Iron sharpens iron and the ONLY way OU was going to be able to win CFP games was to get bigger, meaner, and tougher. End of story. I cannot wait to see the teams coming to Norman and am looking forward to all of the great destinations the SEC has to offer. OU had a rough year last year, but let's not bury the Sooners just yet.

My aunt and uncle lived in Prairieville for several years when I was in my teens. One of my favorite things was coming down in the fall and going to a LSU game and the tailgating scene. It's on a different level and maybe it's because I was younger, but I was never treated poorly when we went. In fact, it was just the opposite. I look forward to going back to watch OU and LSU play a game in Death Valley at night. LSU has a great campus. Looking forward to it for sure.

It's the same with Aggie fans. If there's one of OU or Texas that doesn't want to, you need to look over at Austin for that. Now the money, not going to argue that point at all...

I won’t disagree here. It’s a weird position for schools like OU and Texas to come in to the SEC and now some traditional rivalries may be lost. I can say for sure that’s not what we as a fan base wanted. However, I hope the schools currently in this conference can understand why we made the move. The little 12 had been stale for a while. Changes needed to be made to compete at the highest level, regardless of what the immediate effects may be.

Everything here is right on the money. I will add that having the “olds” yell at people for standing up during the game is ridiculous. The student section emptying out by the middle of the third quarter if the game seems to be in hand.
The biggest for me is the not supporting all sports. Although we lost, the run our baseball team had in the CWS should be celebrated and inject life and rally support, but like it was said they will most likely shrug their shoulders and move on to football or softball.
I’m sure there’s more, I just can’t seem to think of any.

If you add 4 more teams, who does the SEC go after? UNC? Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Clemson? It would be interesting to see who the SEC would want to bring in.

I see where you’re coming from and yes there are those who expect to win now. But I really think the administration (President Harroz and AD Castiglione) knows what it’s going to take, which is time. It’s been said here before that Lincoln had some really good skill players, but the defense and both lines were way undersized. Rome wasn’t built in a day and I still feel that most believe it will take time. Honestly, the move to the SEC right away would only hurt Oklahoma more. Coaches need time to recruit the players they want/need to compete in the SEC. I would love to see us here in 2023, but I think it’ll be 2024, which only helps OU .

This just isn’t true. Real OU fans understand this isn’t the Big 12. We know that conference titles and trips to the CFP will be fewer, but that’s ok. Iron sharpens iron and time and time again OU has gotten beaten handily at the hands of the SEC. Obviously the schedule gauntlet is a big part, but look at the offensive and defensive lines of the SEC. OU has to get bigger and stronger on both lines to give themselves a chance. We want to be a part of the best conference in the country. We want to get better, we want those dogfights that may result in losses, but make you better in the long run. Will it take time? Yes, but I believe Oklahoma will be just fine in this conference and that includes more losses and fewer conference titles. But, the years that OU may make it to the CFP, they’ll be ready for anyone. There’s nobody else we as OU fans would rather have than Brent Venables leading us to the SEC. I look forward to the tailgating, the great atmospheres, and hopefully meeting a bunch of y’all.

Obviously OU has no real say, and I know we will get Texas and most likely Mizzou due to the Big 8 connection. However, going with recency bias, it would be cool to see Florida, LSU, or Tennessee as a third. The atmosphere in this stadiums is amazing and it would be fun to go see new places The problem there is that it makes no sense to tear apart long standing rivalries just to force new rivalries on schools. We’ll go with whatever we get, but it will be interesting to see if this is what they go with and how they divvy it up.
