Will SEC championship game continue?

With a 12 team playoff, I guess it might help with seeding.
Could 2 unbeaten SEC teams decline to allow 2 one loss teams to play instead?

Ask yourself this: "Is there a shitload of money to be made by having it?"
If the answer is yes, then yes it will continue.

I think it will go away eventually. The only reason it is still there right now is because it makes money. TV contracts will dictate this instead of the conference. We will probably move away from it when we eventually move to 9 conference games.

The SEC makes a lot of money from the title game but most other conferences don't. Not sure if the Big Ten one does well but if it doesn't, I wouldn't be surprised if the SEC is the last hold out

In the new CFP structure, ONLY conference champions are seeded #1-#4 and earn a first round bye. And the SEC is not gonna leave naming its champ with potential tiebreakers when no round robin has been played.

What are the new tiebreakers? I haven't been able to find them. They probably haven't even formed them yet.

Makes too much money to go away. Biggest problem becomes if we are doing away with divisions and we end up with a nine game schedule; you will have situations tied teams did not play the same amount of home and away games. Will make for a whole lot of bitching if one team gets the nod and played 5 conference games at home and the one that didn't played only 4 conference games at home.

No b/c then the team(s) in question would be giving away a top 4 seed for not being a conference champion.
Unlike basketball and baseball there's not a phony "regular season champion".

Too much of a cash cow. $ankey's not about to give that up.

if it continues, we will have to stick to an 8 game sec schedule. with the expanded playoffs, you just can't ask the teams to play that many games.
yeah, alabama did it in a one off season during covid, but with the conference schedules now it would be murder.
10 SEC games and have to win 3 in the championship series? too brutal. as far as money goes, the league should more than make up for it if everyone is playing another quality game every year.

The question is whether it will continue to make that much money.
I'm not sure. The minute a team is guaranteed a seed and sits starters for the conference championship game, you can call it.

SEC is not about to do away with a money maker like the SECCG.

It shouldn’t, but it probably will.
On paper it makes a lot of money… We’ll see how that viewership holds when both rosters opt out lol.

The issue is that, say, we have a year that the #1 SEC team is 12-0, and two other teams are tied for second place with a 10-2 record. However we decide to break that tie, the loser has it made. They'll be 10-2 and will get into a 12 team playoff. The winner of the tie breaker gets to play in the SECCG, likely lose, and end up 10-3 and out of the playoffs.

Only way it goes away is if college football teams gets 13 games per year with season ending on what’s now Championship Saturday.
