Looking ahead to the 2023 season and both returners and incoming players. I included a few freshmen offhand but omitted most as we won't know which will crack the depth chart or be shirted. Also, the big caveat is that we still might lose a few more to the portal we didn't see coming, since the first window doesn't close until January 18th and the second window is May 1-15. Another is that we don't yet know the guys who will take COVID years, so I'm denoting a few below.

Offense
QB - KJ Jefferson, Jacolby Criswell (TR), Malachi Singleton (FR)
RB - Rocket Sanders, Rashod Dubinion, AJ Green, Dominique Johnson, Isaiah Augustave (FR)
WR - Bryce Stephens, Jaedon Wilson, Isaiah Sategna, Harper Cole, Andrew Armstrong (TR), Isaac TeSlaa (TR), Tyrone Broden (TR), Sam Mbake
TE - Ty Washington, Luke Hasz (FR), Shamar Easter (FR), Nathan Bax (COVID?)
OL - Brady Latham, Beau Limmer, Ty'kieast Crawford, E'Marion Harris, Joshua Braun (TR), Andrew Chamblee, Patrick Kutas

Defense
DE - Jashaud Stewart, Landon Jackson, John Morgan (TR), Zach Williams (COVID?)
DL - Cameron Ball, Eric Gregory, Nico Devallier, Marcus Miller
LB - Chris Paul, Antonio Grier (TR), Jordan Crook, Mani Powell
DB - Quincy McAdoo, Dwight McGlothern, Hudson Clark, Malik Chavis, Jayden Johnson, Lorando Johnson (TR), Alfahiym Walcott (TR), Ladarrius Bishop (MED RS?), Jaylon Braxton (FR)
P - Devin Bale, Max Fletcher (?)
K - Cam Little

Initial thoughts — we’re stacked at RB (though I suspect we lose one to the portal) and oddly have a bit of experience in the back end, but we need to hit the portal at WR, TE, DL, LB and safety.

Also remains to be seen what players take a COVID year. Guys like Luke Jones and Zach Williams are on the clock.

Pretty sure Gerald is done at this point but who knows maybe we can find some creative math to get him an 8th year.

By the looks of it our weakness will be the exact same as this year. WR ,TE, and secondary. Could probably use another pass rusher but I don’t think the Dline will be an absolute liability

OL

Henderson is in the portal and add Chamblee. Will be on the two deep if not an outright starter next year.

We need starters for S, LB and WR IMO. Best available at pretty much any position except RB after that.

We still have a pretty damn good roster for next year with a solid class coming in and plenty of schollies for portal pick ups in the offseason.

if there's one good thing about boring Rick Shaffer, it's delivering informative stats whether people like him or not

He said we've got room available for something like "18 portal players" to come rolling in

He said this after the game the other night, before Hog Radio put that lunatic Derek Ruscin's meth arse on

Oline will be questionable.
Highly unlikely we find another Matt Landers for next year.
We need more speed/pass rush on the Dline.

Depth will be an issue once again. Injuries will kill us

I actually think LB is okay now with Paul, Crook and Grier as the main three with Powell and Woodard backing them up and the freshmen after that.

Definitely need another WR and a TE (Jake Roberts probably, then sign Easter). Would be nice to get an OT but feel like we’ll only go after one if he’s a can’t miss.

On defense I’d like a DT and then a small army of DBs. I think we’re okay at DE too.

Blair is in the portal. Great kid and hard worker, not a SEC safety.

Updated to remove Blair.

Agree on your point as well. I hate the optics of losing a Captain at a position of need, but he was a huge liability in coverage.

Eh, I don't know if I agree.

On the offensive line, if we don't lose anyone else to the portal or the draft we'll return Limmer and Latham, potentially Jones if he takes a COVID year, and Crawford. Plus, we get Braun from the portal, and we have a few highly touted redshirt freshmen like Harris, who did really well in the bowl game, and Chamblee.

Injuries are sort of a flukey 'ball bouncing a certain way' type of thing. Catalon aside, we were pretty lucky with injuries throughout 2021 and remained relatively healthy; this year the ball bounced the other way and KJ missed a few games, we were decimated in the secondary (including Catalon 2.0), and Pool was hurt all year, among others.

Will be very interesting to see how the portal shakes out between the bowl games and 1/15, as well as the May portal window. Remember, we got the entirety of our 2021 defensive line in May of that year, so I suspect the staff will be putting in a ton of work in the portal. I'm hopeful Williams can pull a few defensive players, including those UCF guys who portaled after he got hired.

With the defense already thin, I wonder if some of these guys like Woodard, Blair, and Nichols jumping in the portal were encouraged to do so by the staff. Otherwise, wouldn’t they think they would now get more reps?

Oregon just had a TE get granted an 8th and 9th year of eligibility for a string of injuries suffered in college.

I’m sure. Probably stayed for the bowl game knowing we were thin and they’d get more game tape for potential landing spots.

I won't be shocked to see AJ and/or Dominique look for playing time somewhere else. Both good backs, but the room is going to be loaded with Rocket, Dubinion, Augustave. My ideal would be one of the two to stay (not sure which I prefer at the moment, maybe Dominique since he is a different type back) while Augustave redshirts.

I think they should work McAdoo at safety, he has a nose for the ball and he’ll knock the snot out of somebody. He also doesn’t care where he plays, he just wants to play.

Plus the several guys we’ll be adding from the portal

If last year’s portal signings are any indication, the new guys will have instant impact.

They free up a scholarship for a portal player who we know will be better

Agreed.

I've said all season that I have a feeling we lose Green and/or Johnson. I could see us losing Green to the portal given Dubinion's emergence and Rocket solidified as RB1, though I could also see us losing Dominique to either medical retirement or the portal for a fresh start off injury a la Catalon after tearing the same ACL twice in 10 months.
