The reason you don’t see elite defense out of Alabama any longer

And by elite, I mean the days when they were suffocating and it was hard to gain positive yardage.

The answer is Kirby Smart. It’s no coincidence that you’ve seen the downfall of the Saban defense with the loss of Kirby smart. No, it’s not his coaching that they miss. It’s the players. He’s siphoned off a large chunk of the elite defensive talent in the south that used to mostly go to play for Alabama.

Alabama’s not capable of recreating those defenses. The personnel isn’t there and it’s unlikely to reappear with the monster Kirby’s created in Athens.

Gus exposed those defenses so saban and others shifted high score offenses and less focus on defense. saban knows how to evolve, Gus did not.

This is at least somewhat true as Alabama very clearly doesn’t have the level, or at least depth, of defensive athlete they had in the mid 2010s.

I also think a large part of being good defensively is a consistent culture, and it’s hard to maintain that while also shifting to a more open and completely passing-centric offensive identity.

Very true!!! Alabama hasn't recruited defensive talent the same since Kirby left. That 16 and 17 defense for Bama were the last elite defenses for Saban and they were players recruited by Smart.

Yeah I think the 17 defense was the last one I can remember that was really good. The 18 one also had a great showing in Baton Rouge.

The players pretty clearly aren’t there at every position like they used to be.

Funny how you posted yesterday that UGA was only winning because we had so many 5 stars and not the coaching.

The talent gap with the Vols and UGA is undeniable. Kirby is a good coach.

Kind of a chicken or the egg situation. Is it recruiting or coaching? Is Bama no longer able to get the right players, or do the players have no idea what they're supposed to be doing?

I say fire Golding and maybe we'll find out.

You are largely correct, but you are missing the biggest reason; 2018 heralded the arrival of the most inept coach I have seen at Alabama, Pete Golding.

It's a bit disappointing. Bama was the last bastion of elite defense in the modern Era of football. It was awesome to watch when they weren't whipping our arse with it.

Their current def coordinator seems to suck. The talent is still there, they just do dumb shite, like allow Hill to run.

Pruitt was a better DC.

Think about this. Saban had Kirby as DC from 2008 until he left. At LSU he had Muschamp as DC. Did Saban get his defensive genius moniker solely because of these two guys?

*And Pruitt like poster above said.

I think so. That’s not a knock on Saban as a coach as he got the right guys, just he was mislabeled as a genius on D.

Wait, I thought Saban was the GOAT recruiter and defensive mind.

It’s not the recruiting, it’s the development defensively. And I’d say namely it’s 1st Round defensive tackles. He too easily abandoned running the ball and playing defense. You don’t need to throw it all the time, you just need to be able to. Alabama can and should Do it again.

I rewatched the 2016 Alabama LSU game in prep for yesterday’s game and man it is so clear Alabama does not have the same presence on defense anymore
