Early in the state game when we tried zone he completed passes and late in the game with the other QB he went something like 13 of 13. I know we were in a bend dont break mode but still, we did not seem very effective in zone.

Is it that its new to a lot of the fellas, lack of chemistry due to early in the season, or my poor vision? Just curious.

I think it's a combination of us having a roster recruited for Steele's scheme, which is very different from Mason's, and Mason's scheme allowing stuff underneath to prevent big plays. We're probably going to look more "bend, don't break" under Mason than under Steele.

I hope not. That bs defense was infuriating.

It can definitely be frustrating at times, but with a great defensive line and blitz schemes, it can be extremely effective. I like the way it keeps everything in front of the defense and mitigates big plays. Iowa ran it to perfection last Saturday.

A lot of these guys were the top athletes in high school and their coaches probably told them "go cover number 84 all night". That along with the rise of 7on7 doesn't bode well for a lot of these guys learning zone concepts.

Not to mention that a zone defense is easier for an offense to attack. There are inherent weak spot in a zone. You're right in that it's a way to not give up a big play and keep everything in front of the defense, but it allows an offense to sustain drives easier.

This is all it was. I wouldn't look too much into it. Penn State will give us an idea of where we are offensively and defensively

Without consistent pessure/contain on the d-line like we have had in the past. Its thought to run alot of man. The main goal is to stand tall on third down and limit big plays.

I like what he did.

Game one we were mainly in man.

Game two it was mainly zone.

A lot was put on tape for a learning experience, for both players and coaches. I expect to start seeing a blend of each.

Thanks for the input guys.

I noticed that as well, two different schemes for the two games, and I figured it was to get a look at what we could or could not do. I agree, good idea and lots of tape to work on.

Lets hope they are paying attention this week in the film room and on the practice field.

I feel really good about this game. Lots of early across the middle to the tight ends to back off their lbs and then Tank and company start to eat, opening up the passing game for some big plays.

This makes a ton of sense to me. And it would be consistent with what we are learning about Harsin’s style of coaching. Get a lot of stuff on tape to teach and develop. Nothing that would tip the hand while playing an inferior opponent, but enough to teach and develop and have options for tougher games.

Same here.

He's wasn't going to show Franklin anymore than he had to, no tendencies, nor injury reports, on either side of the ball. And if anything make him plan for as wide a package as he could. Almost if he had this game circled coming into the season.

Plus it didn't hurt to practice more than the same half-dozen plays.

There was definitely a lot of trying things that took place in the game. They threw out some tampa and gave the DE’s some coverage opportunities.

Man defense is kind of like a fastball pitcher. You know what’s coming, but can you do anything about it. If so the pitcher is in trouble, but that’s usually a big if. Zone is kind of like a junk pitcher. They’re going to throw a lot of things at you and have you guessing.

I expect zone to be our base and throw man at people situationally. I could see us using more man against someone like PSU who is going to be focus on the run and really has 1 WR that you can key on. I’d love for us to put McCreary on Dotson all game and then make the other guys beat us.

You're referring to the prior game where we gave up 0 points?

A lot of what we were running was vanilla Tampa 2 type stuff. Keeping everthing underneath. I would assume we've been preparing for Penn St. the last two game weeks.

I am going to guess and say we'll be showing alot of Okie and Bear fronts against Penn St and try to kill thier QB. Should be fun.

StatTiger on 247 posted a very good point… while the defense is allowing a 73% completion percentage, we are only giving up 7.8 yards per catch which is 2nd nationally.

Between our great edge rushers and a scheme that’s designed to keep everything in front, we’ve basically shut down the intermediate and long passing game of our first two opponents.

Are you referencing the fact that if we play the same defense as prior game no one will score against us?
