He wasn't close to being the best choice. People were pointing out better choices that were realistic hires...

What if it’s a done deal with Sumrall and they plan to announce Sunday after Iron Bowl but Tulane makes the Playoff?

Do we let him stay and coach them or make him come on to Auburn. Him staying there and also trying to deal with recruiting, portal, and building a new staff would not be ideal.

No it's Tulane, they are pretty mediocre. He needs to get here and do his job.

We may have some talent on the OL.

With a proper offense and proper QB coaching, I believe you'd see a snowball effect translate to the OL. Start out with running an offense that has more than five plays and that is actually complex.

I think what's most important is they have him locked up and the current players and commits know who the coach is going to be.

Also, let's be real. even if Tulane makes the playoffs, it's basically a 1 and done with them. I can't see them beating any of the other teams in the playoffs, which means it's still gonna be short lived.

We can call him that if we win games with him as head coach. I don't have much confidence in that at the present time.

Personally, I don't want a coach who would bail on his team before the playoffs. And IF you've hired the right guy, you should be willing to sacrifice 1 recruiting/portal season for 10+ years of great coaching.

My 0.02 cents worth.

I don't think he'd even be sacrificing that. Tulane isn't going anywhere in the playoffs even if they make it. those games are on the 19th/20th of Dec. if i'm reading correctly, there's no Dec. Transfer Portal this year. NCAA changed it to a single 15 day window starting on Jan. 2nd-16th. That will be a little different for us however since they also changed the rule about entering the portal after a coaching change. Players have 15 days, starting 5 days "after" a new coach is hired or announced.

So i would think, that if Auburn has only "come to an agreement" but not officially hired Sumrall until the day after the Iron Bowl, then that portal window wouldn't open until the first week of Dec. but that's only for players to leave and not to bring players in.

I don't agree with this at all. He wants to get to the top of his profession, and Tulane > Auburn is a clear jump. Put yourself in his shoes.

In Billy's defense. UF hasnt completely jumped into the NIL game. Texas Tech is a good example when a school and coach embrace the new landscape.

I understand the argument, but he’s been leading these young men for months (years for most of them). Now he has them in the playoffs (well, maybe) and he’s just going to walk out the door? That’s just not for me, man. If I’m the coach, I tell my new employers they’ll have to wait. And I’m if the school, frankly, I rethink hiring a guy who’d do that to his current team. There’s nothing that can’t wait. Even if it’s a short term loss for the new school, it’s a long term gain (assuming you’ve otherwise hired the right guy).

To be clear - of course, I’m not saying you don’t take the job. I’m just saying you wait until your season with Tulane is over before you leave NOLA.

I'm a transactional lawyer, and I don't have any concept how this would work in practice.

I understand the emotional arguments about bailing on your team, but Auburn can't leave anything to chance while we wait this out for a guy who frankly isn't that high value of a target.

Yes, that I understand. I actually posted a long rant about this problem a few days ago. Logistically it seems impossible. AU has to have a binding commitment from Sumrall before the playoffs, so we can stop looking for a coach, and I am not sure how you achieve that while still allowing him to finish the season with Tulane.

Damn lawyers...(I'm one, too).

almost carbon copy of what happened in 2012 when we wouldn’t let Kirb continue coaching at Bama in the SECCG/BCSCG

pretty interesting what-if scenario

Kirb to AU
Gustav to Arky
Bert to UK instead of Stoops?

The staff will tell us all we need to know.

Even if Durkin and his staff are kept, the rest will be a heavy, heavy lift (if done correctly).

Sumrall will be hired. He will coach Tulane until their season is over. Durkin will be on staff and handle a lot of the recruiting/roster retention until Sumrall comes in. Book it.
