I don't think he is necessarily unhappy, but the guy was brought in to fix the defense, while we were an offensive juggernaut, so that we could win championships.

To assume he is perfectly happy fielding a great defense on a team where the offense his constantly putting his players behind the eight ball is naive.

I personally would not be surprised at all if Steele to HC had been pitched and this was some downstream confusion.

If anything the shitty offense only makes Steele's job as DC all the more visible and impressive.

I'm sure he wants to win, but I can't see how what Gus is doing has any impact on Steele otherwise. Even if Steele wants to get an HC gig - I don't think he's harmed in any way by Gus sucking on offense. Even casual CFB fans recognize that he's the only reason Auburn is competitive.

You guys oversell the pension. He makes more off investments than any pension payments he may receive. People who make millions per year dont really care about the 70ishk it will bring in. When I worked for the university, we could look at everyone's pay. Tubs was on the books for 170k. His pension was based off of that.

I’m sure Steele isn’t thrilled about the offense not putting up points but can we pump the brakes on the “defense holding up its side of the deal” thing?

Anyone want to go digging around for how many times Steele has been fired? The guy knows what it’s like to struggle at making his ideas work. Let’s not pretend that Steele is a robot that’s never had a bad defense because he’s had some historically poor performances. He’s done awesome here but he knows as well as anyone that his next stop might not work out either

Not saying this to help anyone’s argument, but Millionaires worry about all revenue generating opportunities.

Auburn rumor time is upon us. I will observe with amusement as they pour in and at those fans who take the bait.

Some very large red flags about Steele. It took him 27 years to progress from a position coach to coordinator. He was an absolute terrible DC and HC until he got to AU. It would be a disaster. People critize Gus for how awkward he is when talking in public. It will be worse with Steele.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I just more meant that the posters that are saying this is total BS and steele is perfectly happy or probably about as wrong as those saying he is absolutely gone if Gus stays.

The truth is that Steele is probably upset with the outcome of the team, as any coach would be. He has probably voiced those frustrations and concerns. That is probably the extent of it, and rumors do what they always do, exaggerate.

This is a fairly recent salary level + football coaches aren't always known to be wise investors

dont really care about the 70ishk it will bring in

You must not know a lot of people who make a lot of money if you think they don't care about their income sources.

For reference, a $70k retirmeent guaranteed by the state easily has a rough market value $1.25million. Every additional year of service would increase the value by about another $100,000 based on the Alabama RSA formula and no change in final salary ($265,000 on books for Steele)

If Steele designates a child as a beneficiary, that child could have 50+ years of benefit payments as well. That is what Pat Summit did for her son for Tennessee

While the value shouldn't change by doing that, it insulates the child from investment risk / volatility which is valuable to an individual

I understand financial investing. Point being he isnt turning down a 1MM plus raise to stay in AL. The pension POV is overvalued.

Don't believe you can do that with Alabama retirement

Alabama’s isn’t as generous, but the child could be the beneficiary and still receive payment for a certain amount of time

The child would receive money until your benefits were depleted.
