quote:Un-Successful was decided when Gus didn't have a QB who had taken a live snap in SEC play. As was his not having an O-line for him to play behind. As was his failure to write a new page of plays this QB could actually excel with. He had to bring in Jarrett Stidham to fill this same need last go round, so it's not as if he shouldn't have seen a need. So is he just ignorant or simply unwilling to adequately plan?
Id still like to see it play out before we decide if it was a success or not.
The O is his baby and no matter how well this team performs they've suffered from a lack of what a good offensive mind should have known.

Yep, it's much just like all the sunshine pumping which lead to his ginormous contract. Not that you ever did that.
Welcome back to being miserable.
And BTW: next time please have the decency to link your indignation back to the originators. *Those who first brought it to this link. Sorry, but the high and mighty just didn't belong here either (and I get your sense of angst).

If Leath and others came to this board to help them decide, we had a lot more problems than just Malzahn’s contract.

The refs will surely call this game fairly.

Get ready to bitch about the officiating. They are going to do everything they can to keep Bama at one loss. It’s like league officials aren’t even trying to hide it anymore.

This x10000000. What kind of offensive "genius" didn't know that you needed to recruit a couple of 4-5* OL every single year and get a competent QB prospect at least every other year?

I was telling my wife this yesterday. No way the SEC lets us win a close game against Bama. We will have to beat the hell out of them and I don't think this offense is capable of that.

First of all.
I just want us to win, no matter what happens next.
Second
I cannot believe I am saying this, but I agree. That A&M GA game was really bad, and bad in a way that really favored playoff contenders.
Still, I think we beat that arse this Iron Bowl.

yea, I think we are spinning our wheels some but this year is not over. Id still like to see it play out before we decide if it was a success or not.
And we are kind of in a area where the "next step" is a tough one. WE are handling teams that we should beat, the next step is consistently beating programs that we are equally talented as or less talented as. Thats a tough step but it is where we are.
Honestly if we play decently against Alabama, in a vacuum the season was fine. It doesn't mean anything about the direction of the program, IMO, but it's not a bad year.
And you're right, Gus has gotten us to a point where we usually beat the teams we're expected to beat (sometimes not inspiring, but sometimes with dominance), but rarely beats rivals/top teams. As I think I've said before, I really think that 15 years ago we were all more tuned in for games against Arkansas and Ole Miss and the like. Those games felt bigger. So getting those wins mattered. Now, none of us care about those teams unless we lose, which obviously puts more pressure on Gus to win the 3-4 games a year that do "matter."
And I think it's worth noting that I'm not sure any of us are truly expecting to beat top programs THAT consistently. We're winning the big 3 about 29% of the time, but that includes contests against LSU/UGA when neither was at the level they're at now. I think beating LSU/UGA/Alabama roughly 30-35% of the time when they're top 10 level teams isn't terrible, but we're not even at that number, and some of the losses were not against impressive teams.
To me this discussion shows just how much Gus is going to pay for not picking off UGA and LSU in winnable games. If he'd won 3 more of those, we'd be what, 9-12 against those three teams? With a chance to get it to 10-12? I just think he'd be getting so much more benefit of the doubt right now if he had just a few more rivalry wins to fall back on. And it certainly looks like getting those wins and getting us back into respectable footing is going to be much harder for the foreseeable future.

We haven't "become" anything. It's annoying to deal with AU people who have an inflated sense of what this program historically accomplishes and the obstacles to move up a level.
It's a college in semi-rural eastern Alabama where the town has only become notable in the last decade or two. Georgia and LSU have states almost entirely to themselves they can dominate. We share ours (a small state, btw) with one of the elite programs of all time. We are not overflowing with money. We're half the size of A&M and much smaller than Alabama and UGA.
If we play ok against Alabama and lose, we'll have gone 8-4 against one of the hardest schedules in our history, with no bad losses and no big losses. In other words - "fine" and "not bad."

I don’t base any decisions off one game alone and especially not the win/loss result of that one game.

Alabama still should be the favorite.
Overall, they still have a better team, so -3 sounds right without Tua.
One area to worry about his Alabama's running game. We keep thinking we can stop the passing of a backup QB, but ALabama has turned to Harris more lately, and he is running well.
If we don't stop him, then it doesn't matter who the QB is for Alabama. They will use playaction and hurt us bad, if we don't shut down Harris.
Also their return game is one of the best.
If our offense doesn't score 24+ points we will lose.

Dude, we just need to hire a new coach and become a top 5 program. What dont you get?

I will never agree with “we are who we are” arguments. Clemson isn’t what they were. We aren’t playing as though we should accept our place in basketball either. LSU hasn’t always been a National power. If we can have consistent success we can improve our stature. Cannot do that while annually losing to our rivals.
