Unfortunately, Allen Green has full support of the coaching staff. Here are some quotes from our local article:

quote:

“We’ve had one of the toughest schedules in the country.”

quote:

“We’ve been competitive in every one of those games. Our focus right now is on Samford, on Alabama and the Iron Bowl, and recruiting.”

quote:

“Our whole focus right now is finishing out the season on a strong note and then focusing on reloading for next year.”

quote:

I love our coaching staff,” Greene said. "I love our players. The more chance I get to spend with them, you start to realize what great Auburn men they are, and they represent the university in a first-class manner, and they compete no matter what the scoreboard says.”

It seems to me the PTB doesn’t want to pony up the funds; or, hopefully Greene is smart and lobbying Gustov up for the Razorbacks

What’s he supposed to say? I’d be disappointed if he didn’t publicly support him.

Uhh...wut.

The defense kept us in those games. The offensive guru and his taking over of playcalling duties certainly didn’t.

7 years is enough. He has done nothing but regress offensively.

So that's our goal? To just be competitive?

"Well all our rivals beat us almost every year but at least the games are competitive" Are we Arkansas?

This is stupid. In what world does the AD not support the coach when his team is in the top 15 in the middle of the season?

Whoever asked Greene to comment on this is just forcing him to give support because it would be stupid to do otherwise

Reality is unless someone with deep pockets wants to bankroll his departure or he voluntarily leaves, we're fricked because of the buyout anyway.

Let's hope Gus can send our seniors out on a high note and at least disrupt his normal trend of losing to all of our rivals and finishing each year with a thud. It won't change my position on Gus overall, but it will make it a little more easy to see him stick around.

I think having multiple years with his guy (Nix) is the great test for Gus. He's got his QB, he's got time, he needs to break out of the rut. If he doesn't then by the time that is apparent the buyout is lower and we part ways and we don't have to deal with a PR debacle for paying 25 million to can an 8-4 coach who has teams ranked on a yearly basis.

Keep in mind that under new tax law, boosters cannot deduct donations tied to 'excess parachute payments' (e.g buyouts). This results in a significantly larger commitment by personal donors to fund this buyout.

Assuming a full deduction at the top tax bracket, you are talking about costing an extra $5-10mil or so

Make a donation to Cecil Newton's church then the money makes it's way to the buyout.

Could they deduct those before ? Seems like that deduction would have only been available to the employer, not boosters making personal donations.

I think in the past it could be deducted because it was considered a donation to the athletic dept (501c3?). What the AD did with the money afterwards was considered a separate entity.

It changed with the most recent tax law update that also took away the ability to write off 80% of your ticket priority donation.

Now the only way to get the write off is to make a donation without there being any type of stipulation on what it is for (ticket priority, buyout, etc.) or as a donation for a capital improvement project (new building, building area upgrade, etc.).

There is also the possibility that our PTB value other metrics other than winning it all.

Going to Arkansas... ADAG wants Arkie to know that Gus is not about to be fired.. The question is does Gus want to leave?

At the end of the day this is about money, perception, and reality.

Perception:
1. We are top 15 vs an incredibly difficult schedule
2. We have been competitive in every game
3. If you are going to credit Gus with the negative you have to give him the positives. He is the reason Steele and defensive team are performing like they are (autonomy, hired them, etc)
4. Program has been elevated regarding off the field perception and is free of NCAA/Negative attention
5. You fire a coach that went 8-4 or 9-3 regular season with that schedule, freshmen QB, and they were competitive the entire time while playing in the most difficult league with the most difficult cross division matchups then you are going to be hard pressed to find a quality replacement.

Reality:
1. If our frosh quarterback makes a couple more throws a game....easy ones that we saw him miss frequently.....we are undefeated or 1 loss right now. That's a fine razor and you can absolutely blame it on n00bie QB that is adjusting.
2. Again, incredibly competitive
3. 2 of our 3 losses were against top 10 teams on the ROAD
4. Our other loss is against a top 10 team at home by one score

Money:
1. Buyout is huge, based on the above alone no one that is smart enough to make enough to cover the buyout is going to knee jerk react and throw it at him with the above perception items
2. Buyout is stupid huge in general to where even if they did knee jerk reactions, ponying up hurts

My Thoughts:
I am frustrated as hell at the season. I see how close it was to being great up until this point. The fact is though, Auburn has won 10 games in a season only 14 times in our history. Gus is directly responsible for 2 as a headcoach and partial credit for 1 as the OC. He is a part of ~25% of our 10 win seasons for the entire course of our existence and has a chance to make this season a 10 win season overall.

I would love to fire him and get better......but I know the chances of seeing an actual improvement are much lower than the chances of us slipping into Tenn / Texas AM / Arkansas purgatory. Some may say risk vs reward....but even the big guys lost big games (hence big game bob, etc). I'm not accepting mediocrity. I don't see anything on the table that makes me confident we can do better atm though. Don't come at me with Coach O stuff, what happens when burrow is gone and that OC leaves....he may reload....or he may go back down to where he was...until we have a quality badass coach on tap that is proven I just dont feel like hiring a new up and comer and hoping they learn on the job.

I'm always amazed at how easily people think other people would be willing to part with $33ish million. Then those same people will be asked to pony up the cash to provide the necessities it would take for Auburn to advance our program.

Leath screwed Auburn and Gus is just good enough to make it slow and steady.

Yep, just got to hope he pulls it together or wait till that buyout is down.
