People wanting Pearl fired after year 1 only want it because Bruce got his son hired (this is the fairness crowd, some weirdos) and they hate this.

To expound further this crowd believes Auburn could assemble a list of 20 strong candidates and vet and interview them. Even if they went 0-20 they could still fall-back on Steven as the bottom tier safety net.

Instead we hired him right away because I just really love Bruce. I remember where we were and I am just in the moment right now. VIBING!!!Let's do it!! 5 year deal!

If you knew Rick Pitino would come if we called him, would you still be in favor of keeping Steven on for another year?

I'm in favor of giving him another year, but if I knew Pitino would say yes, Steven would be gone.

ancient history - water under the bridge - what Dorothy was

Sorry but we're well beyond the what ifs and dealing with the this years remains.

So how do we buy our way to a better season while staying within budget ?. W.E. can't replace coaches in carousel fashion, maintain facilities, and upgrade a roster all at the same time. Unless perhaps one of us strike it rich writing fiction and endow the poor. Because this movie is more like Rudy than Hoosiers.

So to me it's a new head coach or buy a team of new all-stars.... because it's highly unlikely basketball can afford both.

Buyout will cost much less than the cost to flip the roster.

Cannot forget the suck tax.

Accepting the NIT bid isn’t a good sign for the wanting Pearl fires crowd (myself included).

He's a good coach. We could get him from Ole Miss. I think we really, really should avoid yet another coach with baggage.

But either way, get Cohen out of the way ASAP. He can't make the next hire. Would also help to keep things kosher with the Pearls. If Stephen does poorly next year, we need a new AD with no ties to Bruce that can pull the plug.

Petino makes Bruce look like a choir boy.

I'd prefer to stay far away from the slimy guys - Petino, Cal, etc.

Surprised to see everyone critical of accepting NIT bid, I found it a little refreshing.

It could be very telling of who will return next year. Especially If Magwood gets no PT, he’s not being welcomed back.

Uh I think you’re underestimating the respect the school had for Bruce. He didn’t just put AU basketball on the map, he changed the SEC landscape. His only fault was getting caught up in politics. He energized the fan base. He was unique. He earned picking the next coach. His rationale of keeping the staff continuity and roster was fine but I think if Steven is going to own the team he’s going to need some shakeup in the staff. I don’t think those other assistants appreciated the hiring (but could be wrong). The roster definitely was not mature enough to handle it. Putting this season all on Steven is a bit weird. Not to mention, we’re talking about a game or two and we’re easily in. It went south when he decided not to play Key Hall after the technical and the subsequent suspension. I don’t know why he did that but it was the turning point.

Same.

Pretty sure our last nit game was vs Baylor in BEMC… Scott Drew’s first or second year there.

Mfer, this isn't a family run restaurant lol

This is a business, and Bruce screwed over both the university and his son by placing them in this position.

By Chris Marler The SEC has been known as a football first conference for years. The vice grip they’ve had on the gridiron has started to slip a little after not winning, or even playing for, a national title in the last three years.

That dominance has shifted to other sports in recent years, particularly basketball, where the arms race for relevance on the hardwood has reached an all-time high.

On Monday, Matt Brown of Extrapointsmb.com released the operating budgets for more than 200 men’s basketball programs across America for the 2025 fiscal year. It should be noted that only 14 SEC teams were included in Brown’s report, with Florida and Vanderbilt not listed.

The budget figures also do not include any revenue-sharing payments. Here is a look at the budget for all 14 SEC schools that were in the report, including where each program ranked nationally.

By the Numbers
Tennessee – $23,183,445
Texas – $22,403,330
Arkansas – $21,254,027
Kentucky – $20,787,671
Auburn – $20,535,097
Ole Miss – $18,228,378
Alabama – $15,230,392
Missouri – $14,354,000
Texas A&M – $14,318,327
Oklahoma – $13,662,135
Mississippi State – $12,220,602
LSU – $11,104,405
South Carolina – $11,074,153
Georgia – $10,400,030

Next year is make or break for Steven. My biggest fear was motivation and desire. Could he motivate a team? The answer was no. You dont have the big wins, then self destruct the last third of the season without poor coaching. Injuries (Opurum), roster misses (Hall), and suspensions (Magwood) also killed this team. We were down to 6 players this year and we wore out late in games and the season.
