Yeah, Clark had his team going to their conference championship. Where was Gus on Saturday?

I'm no Bill Clark fan. I think the people who want him at AU are insane.

However that being said its EXTREMELY surprising that his name didnt come up at all really with the Ole Miss, Missouri, and Arkansas coaching searches.

As much as people point to UAB and say it is proof that he is a program builder, Arkansas was in desperate need of exactly that. A program builder... And rather than even considering Clark, they hired basically a 60 year old career position coach.

That says a whole lot.

Arkansas was in a tough position. A large portion on their boosters & fanbase wanted Gus, which they couldn’t get for numerous reasons. So their AD wanted to appease as many fans, boosters, & players as possible. Clark wouldn’t have done that. Their AD kept the heat off himself but likely is delaying any progress in Arky for the next 3 years.

I think Bill Clark is probably a very good coach and what he has done at UAB is impressive. With that said, there is something going on with him where teams just aren't willing to give him a look. That, or either he is just content to be where he is at. I don't know which one, but it is certainly odd that he isn't talked about more for these coaching jobs that have come up the past couple seasons. It is just really odd to me.

How he handled the specific UAB circumstances is very impressive, but no major P5 program needs someone to build a program from scratch. Clark does not have major P5 recruiting experience, does not have offensive track record and the analytics don't like his teams.

If I am an Arkansas or Ole Miss booster, it is hard to shell out $10-15+ mill buyout to hire a guy with a boring offense, good not great ConfUSA defense, no P5 coaching experience and no experience recruiting in the big league P5 level

Yep. If Clark was the HC from one of the Louisiana directional schools, nobody here would ever mention his name.

The Tulane guy is who I would have gone after if I was Arky. I watched them several times this year and was impressed each time. He has recruited P5 talent to Tulane too.

I think most programs just want to see more from Clark. He’s not a flashy guy with some high powered offense and he’s shown to be successful at doing something he will likely never have to do again (rebuild a program from the ground up). If he is able to show continues success (ie winning more conference championships, beating decent teams, etc) then he will shoot up AD’s lists.

Right now he is beating the teams he should beat and losing to most teams with a pulse.

People are still refusing to see the whole picture. UAB was in a rebuilding year.

From the 2019 preview on SB Nation:
quote:

But yeah, this year’s going to be tricky. Clark heads into 2019 replacing his leading passer, his top four wideouts, four starting offensive linemen, all three starting defensive linemen, four of his top five linebackers, and four of his top seven defensive backs. When he was putting together his zombie roster, he predictably leaned heavily into the JUCO ranks — you would, too, because the only other option was to hit the ground with a bunch of redshirt freshmen.

And we know it takes a little luck to have continued greatness (just ask Bama,) well,
From AL.com 1 day ago:
quote:

Multiple injuries to the offensive line throughout the season. Not too mention relying on a backup quarterback that wasn’t quite ready to lead a functional offense.

Clark barely had a team and still made it to the conference championship. He'll get slaughtered by a good App State team, but they'll be back to dominating in the next few years. Mark my words. The dude can coach, and yes, I would take him over Gus.

Bill Clark should be ashamed of himself. FAU had a week filled with distractions due to Kiffin mania and UAB got freaking dragged. Common sense dictates that the opposite should have occurred.

Barely had a team? Shouldn't he be recruiting to fill the holes he knows he will have? Coaches are paid to fill their upcoming holes and do roster management...

Just sayin you can't give him a pass on that if he does it there he would do it elsewhere...you can't build championship teams doing that...

Most expected UAB to suck this year because they were forced to take so many JUCOs and transfers when the program started back up. Taking that many players in the same year range creates a big hole on the back end.

I’m not on the Clark train like most, but he’s performed a damn miracle at UAB.
