Do people need a college level course on African American studies? How is that going to benefit people in their everyday life going forward after college?
Though it seems to be becoming increasingly nonexistent in an American system that doesn't much differentiate between "college" and "university" anymore, the main purpose of latter has been to be much more formative intellectually than just "getting ready for a job"--hence the existence of a core curriculum that transcends courses of study.
You go to college or a trade school to be trained in something. A university education is supposed to be much more holistic and in that regard, an African-American Studies program should be, at least in my mind when looking at our larger cultural context in the American South, as necessary to that end as the core philosophy or literature or history requirements that every student is required to fulfill.

My only problem with AA studies is that a huge swath of it is really just fringe advocacy disguised as academic study. Same with gender studies. I have no issue whatsoever with coursework on AA literature/history/art/etc. I also think inherent in that is some degree of coursework I'd find politically problematic, and I can't really object to that. I understand at these levels courses are going to veer into some amorphous areas I don't really find to be academically legitimate, but whatever.
"African American Political Thought 1820-1863" seems very valid to me. If it gets into the origins of modern black radicalism, ok, whatever.
"Black Queerness and Intersectionality" is the type of stuff I'm talking about. There is no academic rigor there. It might as well be "extremist political advocacy 101"

Dude's as white as mayonnaise holding a sign saying to abolish whiteness?
I don't think it's possible for anyone to signal a virtue harder than this loser.

Let me see if I'm following.
Trying to be edgy/virtue signal, create controversy, draw attention, people make fun of him, he gets to be a victim, will claim the south is racist and stupid, profit?

Well students, faculty, etc. will be greeting him with "War Eagle", more so now then he can imagine.
I wonder what his preferred pronoun will be? (Yes schools including Auburn are moving toward this.)

Probably. Dude almost assuredly doesn't give a rats behind about Auburn, we are a platform that will be easy for him to use to claim persecution.

I'll go on record saying that colleges and college towns need some batshit crazy leftists. We had professors who were pretty much socialists who thought a lot of us were bigots, most likely. But despite that, I always got the sense they cared about Auburn and to some extent cared about us and recognized that the flaws they saw in the average white male Auburn student didn't necessarily invalidate everything else we believed in or might do with our lives.
In some ways I think we were a fun challenge to them because even then it was probably fairly rare to have 75% of the student body touting Bush/Cheney and arguing against them.
But guys like this, of which there are a lot now in academia, seem different. They're self-loathing and hostile and don't even seem to have the desire to "enlighten" us, they just want to eliminate our ability to participate in conversations.

When I went to school I thought many, (if not most) of my professors were far left. Didn’t really matter. I learned their opinion and then tuned them out. We can hate on his first couple tweets about the war eagle, but Auburn fans should stay away from attacking his queerness on Twitter. Not a good look. We don’t want our university having to offer awkward apologies in a SJW world.

Pretty sure this reporter is a dem and the guy that predicted Bob Stoops to Auburn. All sides probably think he’s a joke.

I don't much care if an Auburn professor is willing to say "War Eagle," ("peace eagle" was pretty popular at one time) but it's not a good look when a prof who's job is to educate students in order to achieve better understanding of the world doesn't practice that.

I lean left and even this guy is on another planet. Good reminder that almost all of our beliefs, one way or another, are on a spectrum and not easily placed into just two separate boxes.

"Abolish Whiteness."
First of all, that sign looks like shite. No production value.
Second, can someone tell me what this even means? Please don't say it means this guy is a little bitch or something. What does he think "whiteness" means?

Good comments Jang.
I agree, and i tend to be a centrist w/ more leanings conservative, but although this professor put himself out there pretty quick by giving his opinion on saying our signature saying, that's all he did.
We don't need to question his studies or his personal preferences. I hope our students can just enjoy the diversity that maybe he brings, and find some common understanding somewhere deep in his teachings.
I as in your comment don't ever want to be so liberal and progressive as so many colleges tend to be, BECAUSE of the views of the professors they tend to hire.
But many college students are not given the 'TOTAL picture' of conservative or centric views, but seem to have the liberal views shoved down their throats.
That is what bothers me.
ANd to that professor in his first class, I hope every student greets him with a kind 'War Eagle' each and every day of their classes with him....

That “professor” has a mental disorder.

He has probably received more attention than any new faculty member in a long, long time.

Leave it at that in this subject.

I don’t remotely care about his sexual orientation and of course nobody should be railing against the guy for that.
I just think this guy is bad news and kind of a walking stereotype of what’s wrong with certain segments of academia.
