Like clockwork, the classic "my life / my great-great grandpappy's life was hard too" responses. Trust me, I get why people have that response. I would just try to suggest to not think about it as belittling your achievements and more about the unecessary obstacles from others.
A couple quick examples just about names
1) My good friend has to have his white girlfriend make apartment inquiries. Many landlords prefer not to rent to people whose name is hispanic. Friend doesn't even speak Spanish
2) We were hiring a position awhile back and let's just say that your birth name was an unspoken filter for most people. Something a person doesn't get the choose eliminating them from a job
And like clockwork, you come back with subjective garble that has no objective basis or quantifiable measure of proof.
1) Oh really? What is "many landlords"? 1? 3? 5? 500? How many times has your friend inquired on apartments? How can you prove that your friend's name had ANYTHING to do with his supposed rejection? Even if it did happen and it WAS the case - congrats - you found a racist person. Now what? Racism is an unfortunate human truth that is replicated everywhere on this planet. You are never going to "eliminate racism" - its as silly as saying that we need to eliminate all murder. You said that so matter-of-factly that I'm now confused as to how ANYONE with a foreign-sounding name gets an apartment. Do they all get their white friends and/or girlfriends to inquire for them?
2) This is the most vaguely BS statement I have seen in weeks. If there was an "unspoken filter", how exactly did you come to this matter-of-fact conclusion? You just deduced it out of thin air? I already know what you are going to say: there were equal candidates, and everyone wanted to hire the guy named "John". No, there is absolutely no such thing as an "equal candidate" - how can something as complex as two human beings be absolutely "equal"? It is impossible, yet this is a statement that is thrown around by equity-types as a factual argument. Furthermore, you absolutely CAN legally change your birth name. Even with the legitimate cases of some racist hiring manager sifting through resumes based off of the names of the candidates, are these cases not evened out by widespread affirmative action hiring that has entered virtually every workplace?

Careful man. I chose these specific anecdotes because they are real examples of researched and studied topics with quantifiable measures to support the conclusion
GA Tech research on common minority names for identical applications affecting success rates
And
HUD report on racial inequality in housing/rental searches

I do not disagree with any point you made. Whether it is murder or racism though, I see no reason we shouldn't give our best effort to consciously identify and try to reduce these flaws.
I mean, we have already made progress and had success on this front. Not sure why we should just stop instead of doubling down on success

While we’re talking crazy professors at AU, Auburn is really paying this guy.

Did not know this. Lenox Mall is complicit as well. They should divest and stop harboring the police. The image of armed officers protecting a luxury mall is yet another embodiment of racialized state violence protecting private property. #AtlantaProtest

He looks like he could be Shaun King's brother. Lol.

I know we were joking about froot-loop and saying he didn't need to be at AU, but looking at this guy's Twitter feed from last night makes me wonder should there be a complaint lodged against him.
When he found out Lenox Mall was owned by the Simon Corp...
Basically saying it is ok to vandalize/loot a mall because it is owned by a large company? Conservative folks have been doxxed/targeted/fired for saying much less on social media.

That's a lot of stolen land and labor. Protestors FEEL this injustice and KNOW that their feelings of rage and anger are a valid way of knowing.

I believe this professor is exactly who most believe he is. I believe his method is counterproductive. He is attempting to provoke thought but, he is doing more to provoke anger. He is challenging ideas that are very long held by people very invested in them.
Still, this does not mean he is totally wrong or, totally correct.
Ultimately, I think the real debate lies in a "might makes right world" versus a "right makes might" world. Can economic might be as violent as pure brute force?
Ultimately, democracy, freedom, capitalism can only thrive in one environment.
If you believe the answers are simple, you are at best naive, at worst a useful idiot. If you believe skin color has anything to do with statistics, you are a racist.
Society is led from the top, not the bottom. Blaming the powerless is simply the cover some of the powerful have contrived in order to manipulate those too lazy, or unable, to think.

If he was in Atlanta last night, he could have scored some awesome CFB memorabilia.

Mods deleted my post asking if Gene was partaking in the rioting/looting.
I feel it was a legitimate question considering he was railing against racial inequality just a few posts earlier in this thread.
Isn't racial inequality and police brutality against people of color what these protests/riots are about? Why delete my post? It wasn't a personal attack, just curious how committed Gene is to the cause.

I might not agree with Gene on some of his opinions but for Gods sake dude take a hint and show some civility. He has been cordial in this thread, you could respond in kind.
For what it’s worth, I’d highly recommend you let this conversation end here.
