I hear this drummed often w/ welders, plumbers, electricians, etc. I worked in the in electrical business during college and a little bit after. We had plumbing and HVAC in the shop too. I know that was nearly 30 years ago, but I still know some of the guys and they're not driving Mercedes and moving into the club.
Also, crawling under houses & in attics @ 25 years old is easy, 25 years later and thousands of houses later, it is no fun.

Well, that may because they are bad with money and not everyone wants a Mercedes, but you make good points about the rigors of these trades.
I helped my son's friend out of HS get an apprenticeship with my company, Cat Dealer, and he started at 19 and is now at 23 a certified field mechanic making six figures, and full benefits, and the apprentice program bought 8,000.00 of his initial tools and tool box. Had no debt because it was all paid for plus he was paid an hourly wage while training.
I see old timers all the time turning wrenches. Some still love it and others may not. However, he has been working on a degree and can transition into management should he want to. There is a huge shortage of diesel mechanics in the heavy equipment, Agriculture equipment industry.
He is building a nice 401K, and saving money for his first home that he will be buying this year with a sizable down payment. His hobby is motorcycles and he purchases classics or regular and refurbishes them and resells. Rides some and keeps them if they have opportunity to build value.
Lot's of opportunities in trades. You aren't wrong about the climbing into attics and crawl spaces, but some do it till retirement and have loved their career, and some do not, but still had a long career and built up a life and retirement.

I am not going back and researching what is going on here, but why are you talking about 401ks and diesel mechanics in our recruiting thread?

quote:This. With multiple offensive and defensive packages + the two deep you end up with about 25-30 guys on each side of the ball who are "game ready" so call that 55-60 guys.
All rosters have a combination of prospects and depth. Ultimately there’s 22 guys that start, rotational help, plus the special teams. But that’s almost always about half the roster no matter how good your program is. There’s only so much playing and practice rep time available to guys
In practice, the rest of the guys run scout team looks for those guys to get reps. Some of those scout team guys are redshirts and freshmen who need more development, some are career scout team but may get some time in particular special teams looks, you never know. With one injury a guy goes from scout team D-Line to being in the rotation (D Line notoriously needs a lot of rotation).
Either way you're for sure using the full scholarship limit with "useful" players, whether or not they are all playing on Saturday.

This is something I could get behind.
Can you imagine CFB teams firing their coaches midseason and bringing in a fixer to get the team above the line (Actually, we just tried that, didn't we). Or playing a late season game against Mississippi State where the loser drops to the Sunbelt. It definitely would add some excitement.
It would be amazing and it would give every school a chance to reach the highest level unlike the farce now where half the schools have no shot. I guess the 12 team playoff will change that some but it will also bring a lot of negative aspects as well.

He’s got 5 stars, but the Top 100 list says he’s moved up 10 spots to 79 overall - how does that work?
Assume the rankings are still being updated??

Because what the frick are you going to do about it?

Well means he is balling out in the all star games so he is progressing very well. Good cause we need him to start come fall. We are razor thin there, razor thin.
Someone on one of the podcasts said he weighed in at 270 and was still quick as a cat.

They haven’t fully updated the list yet just released new 5*s. I think I seen where he had moved up to 19 overall
