I didn’t watch the game but why isn’t a 7’3 guy dunking the ball if he truly has a wide open lay up?

That's an even better question. It was right there for the taking.

Justin Smith hid the vanover weakness.

Yup. He's a missing piece that we just couldn't afford to miss.

His vertical jump is only 6"

He reminds me of Alan Bannister, the 7'4" guy who played at ASU in the late 80s.
Bannister was thicker so harder to push around, but equally un-athletic. When he held a beer can in his hand you literally couldn't see the can.
Comment made on TV last night about Vanover wanting a sports car, but would have to take out the front seat... Bannister had a Camaro where he did something similar.
Smith it turns out was likely the ONE guy we could not lose during this part of the schedule... probably even more-so than Moody.

After playing 28 games at Findlay Prep he averaged 8.3 ppg 6.4 rbs and 1.5 blocks.
He still seems weak and timid, not what we need in SEC play. Smith is definitely a better prospect for the league we play in.

Long term our best rotation will be Jaylin williams at the 5 and Justin Smith at the 4 with Desi, Moses, and Jalen Tate making up our backcourt.
EDIT: I think guys like Conner, JD, Devo, and Vance will be better off the bench.

Smith looks like Julius Peppers.
Vanover looks like a Gulag inmate...
For those thinking he's going to get more aggressive.. That's not going to happen. He's obviously just a timid player. That doesn't get out of your blood.
It took Pau Gasol a decade and Kobe riding him like a jockey to get even a shred of tenacity, and Vanover ain't Gasol.

Against certain teams he can be effective.
Against other teams he shouldn't be on the floor. Does more harm than good.
One thing for certain is that he has to make shots if he wants to play.

I don't understand why we keep starting him. This isn't an exaggeration, any of our guards are better post defenders than him.
"But he's a perimeter player and can shoot the 3"
Last 6 games he has 10 total points. 2 for 7 from 3 pt range.
It's just not worth it. He can't move. He can't set a screen. He gets pushed around by literally anyone. With Williams coming back he should not see the floor at all. Hell, Williams is shooting the 3 at essentially the same % as Vanover this season.
It might be tempting to say he should be used sporadically or situationally, but no, he shouldn't see the floor at all. If we end up in a situation like Bama a few years ago where everyone fouls out or gets injured, we are better off running with 4 players on the court.

Musselman knows he sucks, but keeps starting him. There has to be some kind of strategy involved there, whatever it is. Maybe a diversity thing?

quote:He starts him then never plays him again most of the time. It's almost like he dips his toe in the water to see if he's going to be effective or not then just goes from there.
