This is Sam's most disappointing hire so far. Maybe it will work out but this is the first time he hired someone and my initial thought was "ew". He needs to bring in some stud DL after spring to change my mind on this one.

Adams was making $155K at FIU.

Probably around $500K for him and Bowman combined.

With our other defensive hire you could easily say "he looks like he has the potential to be really good."

With Adams... enh... not so much. He's either a budget hire (which is understandable, we do need to loosen the purse strings to get more money) or Pittman thinks he or Odom can be the coach whisperer and get something out of this guy.

Wonder if maybe this is an Odem hire? Pittman seems to largely let his Coordinator run their respective sides of the ball, and this could be a simple as letting Odem make his own bed so to speak. For that matter, could be something to do with the dynamic with Odem after Pittman got ride of someone Odem liked.

Everyone says this, and it’s probably true, but how many dudes are we going to lose when a coach takes a HC job if they have no real ties to Pittman? The whole side of the ball?

The optimist in me is hoping Pittman mainly hired Adams to help with recruiting and Pittman himself will have more input in the actual development of our D line.

If there's anybody who can get a D-line coach steered in the right direction, it's Pittman. He knows a lot about both sides of the trenches seeing as he played D-line and coached O-line.

I'd rather us not have to teach an old dog new tricks but maybe that's what it takes to get better recruiting for the time being.

He’s not known as a good recruiter though which is the head scratching part of this hire.

Yeah, this hire makes no sense to me.

It does if Hunter gives you a budget (counting your own salary) and you choose to keep it instead of getting quality recruiters/coaches. May not be that, but that'd be my assumption.

Fatboss went from "I don't need the money cause I'm old and have not kids", "I just thankful for the opportunity and money is not a factor" etc. to I have Jimmy Sexton and I want $7million dollars for a decent season against the shittiest SEC in a while. Hope that's wrong. He deserves a raise but not $7million. Or I'd agree to $7million but he pays back $1million for each loss. Bonuses for winning west, SEC, NC. shite's getting ridiculous.

I'm noticing as the primary coach the kids are all from jucos. He was only secondary on the highschool kids.

So he was the primary recruiter on 3 JUCOs including Lamin who Bielema had some interest in while here.

He was secondary recruiter for players in NJ (twice), SC (twice) and GA once.

JUCO recruiting is now nonexistent as Pittman has said with the transfer portal.

Yeah he's been involved with a lot of great recruits.

Also coached Clowney to #1 overall pick.

SEC Head coaches pay this past season:

Nick Saban, Alabama: $9,753,221 — No. 1 — $38,400,000 buyout
Ed Orgeron, LSU: $9,012,917 — No. 2 — $17,150,000 buyout
Dan Mullen, Florida: $7,570,000 — No. 6 — $12,000,000 buyout
Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M: $7,500,000 — No. 7 — $95,575,000 buyout
Kirby Smart, Georgia: $7,133,600 — No. 8 — $14,614,167 buyout
Mark Stoops, Kentucky: $5,263,600 — No. 15 — $19,921,875 buyout
Bryan Harsin, Auburn: $5,000,000 — No. 19 — $17,791,667 buyout
Mike Leach, Mississippi State: $5,000,000 — No. 20 — unknown buyout
Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss: $4,841,937 — No. 21 — unknown buyout
Josh Heupel, Tennessee: $4,000,000 — No. 35 — $20,666,667 buyout
Eli Drinkwitz, Missouri: $4,000,000 — No. 36 — $11,550,000 buyout
Sam Pittman, Arkansas: $2,925,000 — No. 54 — unknown buyout
Shane Beamer, South Carolina: $2,750,000 — No. 58 — $7,298,958 buyout
Clark Lea, Vanderbilt: n/a (salary not obtained by USA Today) — unknown buyout

Hired
Brian Kelly, LSU: Anywhere from 10 years/$95 million to $15 mil a season.
Billy Napier, Florida: 7 years/$51.8 million — $7.1 million in 2022

Extended
Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss: $7.25 million and increase $100K each year through 2025.
Mark Stoops, Kentucky: $6.35 million and increase to $7.60 million in 2028.

From Sam's perspective new hires to the SEC this year making more that him and everyone who was hired made more than him after a 9 win year 2 with where our program was.

If we paid $7 million we would be middle of the pack.

It's common sense the budget was running thin but if Deke can get anyone with 4-stars to visit campus he will have done more than the last two DL coaches but none of the three to this point should have the label as a good recruiter.

Adams has recruited 1 four-star since 2015.

He's coached some really good D lines in the SEC, I don't think he'll be here long enough for the rest. He's a 1 year guy at a lot of places.

And why do we care so much about this fact all of a sudden? Jermial Ashley has never recruited a 4 star.

Heard on the radio today that Ashley had not had a single on-campus visit from a 4 or 5 star player his entire time here.

4 and 5 star DL are a very limited commodity, and have a large list of offers to pick from. Still, should be able to get some mild interest from one now and then.

We've signed a few 4 star lineman over the years out of Arkansas and Louisiana. Not getting them to campus even I'd s Chad Morris level ineptitude
