Fred Talley was better than most. If you were the primary back for the hogs from like 1995-2015 you were probably a stud.

Former LSU defensive end Landon Jackson is transferring to the Arkansas Razorbacks. Jackson, 6-7, 270, went public with his decision on Sunday, becoming the Hogs’ second incoming transfer of the postseason. Jackson and his family enjoyed an official visit on the Hill over the weekend.

"That family aspect," Jackson said of his decision. "Family right up the road, cousins that go here, and then somewhere that I can get on the field and play this coming season. And I've got a really good relationship with Coach Pittman and Coach Odom right now.

Jackson was initially recruited by Chad Morris' staff at Arkansas, but he's happy to come full circle and play for Sam Pittman.

"I mean, I like that Pittman cares so much for the state," Jackson said. "He's really passionate about what he does, and he's not just here because they're paying him big money. I mean, this is his dream job. I know he's going to give his all to me, so I love it down here."

There was a strong belief that Jackson's mind had already been made up prior to his official visit with the Hogs.

"I had a great time, I've always loved it down here," he said. "You know I've been down here probably 8-10 times from my high school recruitment. It was the same, just gorgeous. Love the coaching staff, love everything they have planned for the coming season. So, overall, just a great trip."

As a 2021 graduate of Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana (Texas), Jackson was a heavily-recruited target for previous Arkansas head coach Chad Morris. The former four-star and No. 125 overall prospect also held offers from Alabama, Baylor, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, USC and many others.

As a freshman in 2021, Jackson saw action in five games but recorded no stats, per Billy Embody of Geaux247.

Jackson was the nation’s No. 8 edge rusher and the No. 19 overall player in the state of Texas, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. 247Sports had him even higher, as the No. 110 overall prospect in the nation, No. 7 among edge rushers, and No. 19 in the Lone Star State.

247Sports analyst Gabe Brooks had a detailed analysis of Jackson as a recruit:

“Elite height. Enormous frame with a ton of space to add bulk to already impressive build,” Brooks wrote. “Put together like a college hybrid edge. Has played variety of spots for perennial Texas 4A D-II state title contender, including off-ball LB, standing edge, and traditional end. Also ample snaps at tight end, especially as a senior. Provided outstanding defensive production and the occasional big-play splash on offense when healthy. Frame potential suggests possibility to fit multiple positions in varying schemes. Flashes quick get-off with terrific closing speed in pursuit. Dangerous from the backside.

“Fairly fluid as a rusher, bends pretty well relative to height/length, and runs the arc naturally. Arrives with a purpose and can provide the big hit. Comes from a strong 4A TXHSFB program with ample big-game experience. High-cut and struggles maintaining pad leverage at times. Natural arc-runner but must become more violent at point of attack and add nuance to pass-rush arsenal. Heavier, physical linemen can get inside his length and neutralize his athleticism. Playmaking drive sometimes runs him out of plays. Durability is a concern; suffered two significant season-ending injuries: ACL as a sophomore and ankle as a senior. Long-term positional home is somewhat of a question mark given unique play style/frame potential combo. Raw but naturally gifted, toolsy defensive end with a very high ceiling. Could become impact defensive end/edge player at the high-major level. Owns long-term NFL Draft potential with a ceiling in the top half.”

Jackson is Arkansas’ second incoming transfer commitment since the end of the regular season, joining former five-star wide receiver and Oklahoma wide receiver Jadon Haselwood.

Jackson is seen as a much-needed addition to an Arkansas defensive line that is losing two departing senior starters in Tre Williams and Markell Utsey. Defensive tackle John Ridgeway could return for an additional season in 2022 but has an invitation to the Senior Bowl.

Huge get.

I wish 247 would redo rankings with transfers now that the game has changed so much and they arguably matter as much.

We'd have to be quite high.

Apparently Rowser is not signing on Wednesday. Chatter is he still wants to come to Arkansas, but, for reasons not disclosed to the public, he may need a couple more months to get his affairs in order.

Mbake is basically a lock.

Welch is the big unknown. West went from saying he was confident in Arkansas 2 days ago, now to not betting against an LA kid and LSU. He's basically tried to ride the line on not giving a prediction.

One poster on 247 who supposedly has a connection to the coaches said Arkansas' staff is still confident in Welch, but that they did not want him visiting LSU this past weekend. Apparently both lsu and Arkansas feel good about the 4* CB.

We will see.

Other than that, there aren't expected to be any surprises on eNSD. Gentry Williams is not coming to Arkansas.

If everyone stays committed AND they are able to land Mbake and Welch, thought is, Arkansas will finish in the top 20 recruiting rankings for the first and only time since Bobby P's 2009 class, which was around 16 or 18, depending on the service.

Add that to the transfers, one 5* and one high 4*, and Arkansas looks to be getting more talented.

Arkansas is also expected to keep hitting the portal hard in January and that more people will transfer out of the program to free up scholarships. Expect them to go after DLine and LBer hard, according to a few people who claim they are in the know.

Welch is just trolling Arkansas. If it is a player that LSU wants then they won't let them go to Arkansas.

Yep. Especially after losing a big CB recruit to Auburn today, there's no way letting m him get out of the bayou.

Hey, maybe he'll end up hating Brian Kelly and his position coach (who he doenst even have yet) and portal to Arkansas next year...

Does Kelly have either coordinator position filled yet?

Seems sort of odd to go into ESD with very few assistant coaches and no coordinators in place.

What happened to Alex Collins was crazy. Thank God he actually came. He was a solid running back.
I think he had the best vision of any back we've ever had including D-Mac. Watching him follow blocks and wait for holes to open up is like watching a masterclass. There's a reason he's still in the league.

Just goes to show you how easy it is to actually recruit at LSU.

The allegiance to that school from in-state kids is unreal. Dogshit season, position coaches and coordinators gone, and only half a staff, at best, and LSU will probably still land a top 10 class when it's all said and done.

It is a very short drive to Baton Rouge for these recruits as most of the talent in Louisiana is in the southern part. It is why flipping these recruits is very much impossible and Arkansas doesn't have the prestige to pull it off.
