I said this in Stone’s other thread, but I’d take Gus in a heartbeat, and I say that as someone who has generally loathed Malzahn.

Gus would be pretty far down my list of candidates. And I'm so fricking depressed with the state of our program that I would rather have that douchenozzle than who we have now.
But there are seriously like 20 other people I would rather see before Gus.

The Kevin Steele defense is carrying him at Auburn
By no means do I want Gus as our coach, but if Bert could hire a DC like that and we played nasty enough defense to win games then I would be good with Bert staying. Head coaches are supposed to surround themselves with great assistants. Gus is a dork, but you have to five Jim credit for hiring Kevin Steele.

Bielema’s defensive philosophy wouldn’t allow that.
He’s all about bend but don’t break, give big cushions, make the offense put together drives of multiple plays because they have higher chance of screwing up.
Meanwhile the offensive coaches in the modern game are all about the number of snaps and how quick they can run them. Have to attack, cause havoc, create pressure and force turnovers against them.
We sit back, conservative, passive and make it easy the few times that they don’t bust a play for 40+ yards.
We need SEC level assistants in the worst way.

Great defense is probably the only way that we'll compete in the SEC in the near future.
You don't have to have great players, just very good players and a great scheme.

The one-game overreactions always crack me up when it comes to coaching discussions, and that goes both ways. When a coach wins one game it's "yeah I'd totally take him, he's a proven winner, see!" And when he turns around and blows a big game it's "and y'all want this guy here? He sucks and I've been saying it this whole time!"
With Malzahn there's several factors involved in my disliking. Generally speaking, there's both on-field and off-field things that make me want to keep away, but I'd probably bite the bullet and be fine eventually if it were just one of the two.
We saw how good his team can be today, like a top 3-5 team in the country. Where was this team when they lost to Clemson (explainable) and an Orgeron-coached LSU (way less explainable)? One season of this inconsistency makes an anomaly, several seasons are a clear pattern. Also, what happens in this game if he doesn't have an all-world RB appropriately named Kerryon to carry this team with 30+ carries?
The fact of the matter is that every player on that field today was part of a top 10 recruiting class. Where were these results the rest of the season and previous seasons with similar talent? Could he get remotely similar talent here? If he's inconsistent now, what about when he does have lesser athletes?
We've seen Gus' peak with all the talent one program not named Alabama could ask for. It's better than what we have currently sure, but thats setting the bar pretty low and a compromise.
Too often we look to the current times and think that this is how it's always been and always will be, and that goes for both programs AND coaches. "So and so is winning at ____ university so he'd win here too, he's a good coach." Or "_______ is only averaging 7.5 wins a season at a lower conference school, he's not a proven winner and isn't cut out for our school."
How many times have we seen the sure thing "hot name" coach fail when given the keys to a Ferrari? How about previously-unknowns leading their teams to success? The point UFs AD made during his PC after firing Mac was that hiring coaches isn't like going to Best Buy and buying a tv like the fans think. You spend time reviewing and picking out a 50 inch flatscreen, purchase it, bring it home and open the box, and inside is a 50 inch flatscreen. With coaching hires that flatscreen may be 43 inches, a different brand, or broken altogether when you open the box. It may also be a 65 inch ultra HD 4k smart tv.
People don't realize that the next wave of Sabans, Meyers, Swinneys, Petersens, Harbaughs, Belichicks, etc. are out there now somewhere coaching at lesser-knowns, in lower divisions, or even on the sidelines as GAs. You'll never have an elite coach and thus turn your program elite at a place like UofA unless you take a chance on one.
All it took for the current class of "elite" coaches to become elite was the right fit at the right place at the right time, otherwise they were just some unknown up-and-comers too. I don't know about y'all, but id rather take my chances on finding one of those guys and being his right fit at the right place at the right time than settling for a retread with a known ceiling.

Bert’s undoing here was the result of his refusal to learn the lessons that would’ve been apparent to almost any other coach.
He underestimated the speed and athleticism in this league for 4 years and refused to adapt his S&C philosophy accordingly until it was too late, he didn’t hire SEC level assistant coaches, and he had refused to alter his defensive philosophy because it worked one year (a year in which, oh by the way, we still only won 7 games).
Bert strikes me as a guy who if you beat him 9 times out of 10, he’ll only apply the lessons from the lone victory. Let’s not shift away from this bend-but-don’t-break bullshite because it worked in 2014. Let’s have our corners play 12 yards off the LOS because it worked in a Big Ten when nobody passed worth a shite. Let’s focus on size over speed because we pushed around Texas Tech and that one time we almost beat Bama. Let’s not adjust our philosophy because that one time we went 5-3 in SEC play. I know what I’m doing because I won the Big Ten a half decade ago.
Say what you want about Malzahn, but he at least “gets” the SEC, especially from a speed/athleticism standpoint and with regard to hiring assistant coaches. His three DC hires (Ellis Johnson, Boom and Steele) have all been guys with decent SEC track records.

The moment I realized Bert was sort of a loser who traded in empty bluster was after the Texas Tech game in 2015.
Kingsbury crowed (rightly so) about kicking our asses, specifically Bert’s because he was pissed about Bert’s comments that summer to the Texas High School Coaches Association. When Bert was asked about Kingsbury’s comments in his presser, his response was “well if he thought that was an arse kicking, I wonder what last year was.” Here he was moments after a loss trying boast about the previous year.
It was then and there that I thought to myself “damn, this guy might just be a loser.”

What assistants on this team would any other program want now? Smith? Rhodes? Enos? Not sure if we have two on this staff that anyone else would pursue.

Enos is still a good OC imo

Both the OC and DC will get high level p5 jobs imho. CBB takes too much control.
For example, why would he talk to Mitchell concerning the RB and why Hammonds didn't get in anymore? Isnt that the OC's job to direct those under him?
I really wonder what would happen if CBB were out of the way and the OC/DC were let loose...

It is well known he controls both very heavily. Matt Canada almost quit on him because of this. He let him call the game in the B10 championship. Suddenly they score 70. Bert is the reason this team is so bad.

His play calling and identity shift has been baffling the last year and half.
Not sure if it’s him or Bielema or a combo of what he wants to do on offense but I’ve never seen something lacking such cohesion.
Bielema was sunk when Pittman left and we started recruiting a thinner more “mobile” offensive lineman. I believe they said in interviews they wanted meat and potatoes guys and less stars (HS AA types).
When you combo that with the strength staff, we get a line that isn’t physical and can’t push people around.

it is frustrating to see, watch, and actually be able to call the next play much of the time.
The tendencies are terrible.
I was so ON the Bert wagon and now it just hurts to know how much time we have wasted with this giant doofus. I still think he is a good man, but dang...
We absolutely suck in the SEC. We aren't even just mediocre anymore. You should never miss a bowl game in yr 5. And we are going to. We wont beat Miss State or Mizzou.
I paid for the foundation donation, and got 10 tickets that I am not using for this garbage, and cant get rid of. Lower level tickets as in row 5 are going for 12 bucks.

I literally moved shite today instead of watching the game. I don't give a frick right now at all. I'm ready for the coaching search to give me some hope.

Well I hate to rain on the ongoing Gus parade, but those of us that want him to stay far away need to thank the next UGA fans we encounter. It's been said all along that we absolutely will not hire him away from AU, only way he'd get a look is if he were out of a job at the right time. For a while it looked like the Malzahn fan club stars had aligned and that may just happen, but today 100% saved his job for another year.
The sad part is that some will refuse to believe it and hang on to the chance that we could lure him away due to his "Arkansas connections" and the fact he'd be "coming home." What they need to realize is that the man has no state pride, no fandom of the UofA or want to see it succeed, that is just not how he operates. If you think the man loves Arkansas or the Razorback program you either haven't been paying attention over the last several years or the man is a master-class character actor pursuing his second calling in life as a coach.
Can we all just take a page out of his book and move on?

So all we have to do is keep Bert till Gus flames out at Auburn, then he will come back home and save us.
