If they are loading the box, then that opens the pass game right?

Not sure why anyone would put 9 in the box against Simpson..

This isn't a Saban offense built around a powerful running game. Look at DeBoer's offenses in the past and they are more pass oriented. This is the new normal.

I just want to win, whether by run or pass but I will always miss the days of Mark Ingram and Eddie Lacy knocking DBs over like bowling pins.

Earlier poster nailed it. We try to be too complex in our blocking scheme between the tackles against a loaded box. We shouldn’t be running into 8-9 man boxes period, but if we’re going to be stubborn, two things have to happen: 1)drop all the pulling, trapping, chipping, double teaming against superior numbers and just block straight ahead and knock somebody on their arse 2) Jam needs to pick a hole and hit it hard instead of boogieing up to the line like a dancing bear, jump stopping and hopping and trying to change direction in the backfield. Hit the damn hole and if there ain’t a hole, make one!
Grubb has to run the edges earlier and more often to get teams to stop stuffing the box. If we can get plays like the TD where Proctor sealed the edge and pancaked that dude, we can run for days outside.
The reason people want Daniel Hill getting more carries is go back and watch the tape; on his first couple of runs UT hasn’t gotten Daniel on the ground yet. They stopped his forward progress, but they never took him down. Maybe fatigue by the defense factored in but Hill ran hard, ran decisively, and was hell on wheels to bring down.

He seems to be the closer when we're ahead by more than a score. Good build like Derrick Henry but just shorter.

It was definitely some of this.

I am glad though he's getting more carries.

It's frustrating that we can't run it well traditionally, but we do some things "as an extension of the run game" very well and we have a great passing attack.

Yes, the more glaring issue to me is the run defense giving up explosive plays. Against a Notre Dame or Texas A&M in December or early January that is the area that we have to get sorted out.

Is there any team who's run game is dominant? It kinda seems like because HS offenses have become so pass oriented, that run blocking nationwide is it's weakest in years.

Hill should be the lead back moving forward with Miller as a 3rd down, passing situation guy. Miller is hesitating too much, his vision is poor, and he’s going down at first contact way too much for his build. 28 doesn’t really bring anything special at the moment.

Miller's doing better--when he's not sent into the middle of a stacked box. I'd rather give Hill the bulk of the carries in the second half, when he can pound on an already tired defense.

It's a combination of Oline and RBs.
It could also be our RB coach.

Our run game has been terrible for a while now, since long before DeBoer showed up here. The common denominator is the position coach.

In a better world, Justice Haynes and Jam Miller are thunder and lightning this year.

We haven't had an OL who could win a 1 on 1 battle in the run game every down since Cam Robinson. Evan Neal was good but not an every down winner. And as athletic as Proctor is he is simply not a drive blocking brute at his position because his future in the NFL does not demand it.

The last few years we have not really gone out and got the mauler at the Guard spot especially. Instead we really just have a C and 4 tackles pretty much.

I know we prioritized Jam Miller over Justice Haynes because of Jam's pass blocking and receiving skills. But Haynes "one cut & go style" is what we need. It looks like Bama has a stable of guys who try to take the ball and wedge it in whatever hole is there even when there isn't one.

I'm not sure what the solution is. The fact that our RBs aren't feared allows teams to keep 2 safeties deep and really hurt us on deep throws.

I was a big fan of Haynes as a Fr and thought he would be a star and that his running style and quickness would be a perfect fit for DeBoer’s style of offense. But he was mediocre at best last year and a great disappointment on some key plays. In SEC games he ran the ball 54 times for 246 yards and if you take away his two longest runs of 35 and 23 yards his ypc was 3.6. This is not what Alabama needs. Plus he could get swallowed up in pass pro. Finally his play was uninspired to be kind.

A lot of times we aren't running against an 8 and 9 man front because Simpson changes the play. The problem isn't running against loaded boxes, the problem is our OL'men aren't moving the guys in front of them beyond the line of scrimmage. The best we're doing is standing them up at the LOS, and the worst we're doing is allowing penetration. I have no idea if it's because of bad technique, or we're physically weaker than other teams or a combination of both. But teams are stopping us without having to load the box.

I'm honestly as concerned with the majority of our RBs whiffing or barely chipping in pass protection as I am the run game itself.

I've been a Jam fan but I'm beginning to believe this.
